The Bayonne Bridge was shut down in both directions Thursday afternoon, making for a worse commute for those driving in the snow, sleet and rain. The bridge was shutdown by Port Authority due to slippery conditions and several cars becoming stuck on the incline of the renovated bridge, which is steeper than it used to be, spokesman Joe Pentangelo said.

GOP lawmaker faces tough re-election against Democrat Tom Malinowski LEDGEWOOD, N.J. — Nobody dislikes New Jersey Rep. Leonard Lance. The moderate Republican voted against what were supposed to be his party’s major legislative achievements this Congress: the tax overhaul and the repeal of the 2010 health care law. And unlike many of his GOP peers, he’s actually held town hall meetings. His civility and the carefulness with which he chooses his words hark back to a different political era. All that goes over well in his well-educated, affluent 7th District, where voters narrowly backed Hillary Clinton in 2016. But that...

Democratic U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez led Republican rival Bob Hugin by 15 percentage points among likely voters in a poll released a day before New Jersey voters go to the polls. Menendez was ahead of Hugin, a former Celgene Corp. executive, 55 percent to 40 percent in a Quinnipiac University poll released Monday. It was the second straight survey to give him a double-digit lead after several polls showed a tight race. A Stockton University poll released Friday had Menendez ahead, 51 percent to 39 percent. Menendez never trailed in any survey.

Toilet paper and rainbows of silly string dangling from trees, soap smeared on car windows and overflowing foam fountains. Eggshell shards scattered across yards and driveways with with gooey yolks sliding down window panes. Each Halloween in New Jersey, some residents awake to find such sights on their manicured lawns and once-sparkling windows. It's the sign that someone (probably your local teens) had a good time the night before on Mischief Night — which is, apparently, a very Jersey thing. The night of Oct. 30 has long-proved a prankster's paradise. But in recent years, more and more police departments have...

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) clings to a slight lead over New Jersey Republican Bob Hugin in the week leading up to the contentious New Jersey Senate race, according to a poll released on Monday. The incumbent New Jersey Democrat holds a slight four-point lead over Hugin in the final weeks of the Senate race — 47 to 42 percent—with seven percent of voters remaining undecided and a four-point margin of error, according to an Emerson College survey released on Monday. The five-point gap in the Senate race makes the election a tight race in deep-blue New Jersey. A majority of...

Asbury Park's waterfront development boom and the revitalization of its downtown retail and restaurant district has drawn investors, shoppers and diners with cash to spare. But, city officials and community leaders agree, those folks have attracted less prosperous people who are sometimes desperate for cash and not always bashful about asking for it. So last month, the City Council adopted a ban on what it officially labeled "aggressive panhandling." The new law, which went into effect last week, was criticized by advocates for the poor and is being monitored by civil libertarians. Violators of the begging ban are subject to...

The New Jersey Senate race is now looking like a toss-up, according to the the Cook Political Report — a sign that Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez is in serious troubles after years of questions about his ethics. Why it matters: If Republicans pick up that seat, a Senate majority would be out of reach for the Democrats. Federal prosecutors dropped their corruption charges against Menendez earlier this year, but the Senate Ethics Committee admonished him for accepting gifts from a friend. What the race comes down to is Menendez "and his ethics problems," Cook reports, and if the "voter who...

The campaign for GOP candidate for Congress in New Jersey's 11th Congressional district, Assemblyman Jay Webber, R-Morris, said Wednesday that a threat against him and his seven children was delivered to his office in Whippany yesterday. A note sent to Webber's office warned Webber "You better hope you don't win! Or else." and then asked, "How many kids do you have...7? Unlucky 7." Webber has frequently incorporated his wife Johanna and their seven children into his campaign, featuring them in campaign ads. The threat, which arrived with a cut up Webber for Congress sign, has been referred to the state...

In the Menendez vs. Hugin battle for the U.S. Senate millions of dollars have been spent by both camps to dirty up the other Bob in the race. What we have are two men spending a fortune tearing down the other guy. They both have a lot to work with. With Senator Bob Menendez we have an incumbent “severely admonished” by his U.S. Senate colleagues because he “violated Senate Rules and related statutes, and reflected discredit upon the Senate.” His transgressions included not disclosing lavish gifts he got from a Florida ophthalmologist that the Senator did big favors for including...

Democrat New Jersey Senator Cory Booker is now being accused of sexual assault by a man. A Democratic super PAC with close ties to Senate leaders plans to spend $3 million on last-minute advertising aimed at saving Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), who faces an unexpectedly difficult race against a self-funding Republican businessman. The Senate Majority PAC will spend money on statewide television advertising bashing Bob Hugin (R), the retired pharmaceutical CEO who has spent $15 million on his own campaign. “Bob Hugin is a Trump sycophant who is funding his campaign off the millions he made raising prices on cancer drugs as a pharma CEO,” said Chris Hayden, a Senate Majority PAC spokesman. Hayden said the...

New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker said on Sunday the possibility of impeaching Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh shouldn’t be off the table if Democrats take one of the houses of Congress in next month’s midterm elections. Kavanaugh was confirmed on Saturday by a narrow vote following a contentious process that included multiple sexual assault allegations. Other Democrats have raised the possibility of impeaching Kavanaugh over allegations that he committed perjury in his hearing at the Senate Judiciary Committee, on which Booker sits.

The state of New Jersey has a new regulation in its Department of Education: a provision that prevents schools from informing parents of their child's preferred gender and gender pronouns. New Jersey became the eleventh state to have a specific gender provision in its state regulations, per NorthJersey.com. The local newspaper claimed that the rules are "intended to promote a safe and successful learning environment for [children]." The regulation, which was signed into law by former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, says that gender identity decisions reside with the student, not the parents, despite the fact that students are children...

...Altaif Hassan, a senior at the college, and freshman Giovanna Roberson were pulled over by police on Monday afternoon in the parking lot of the school's Mimosa Hall, according to NBC Philadelphia. Glassboro Police Department received a call about an armed robbery near the campus on Monday and a witness description of the suspect's car was similar to the car Hassan and Roberson were driving, according to Vice President of University Relations Joe Cardona. Because police believed there was a handgun in the vehicle Hassan and Roberson were in, the officers trained their weapons at them and ordered the students...
