Aggressive mimicry is a biological strategy where a predator or parasite will imitate a harmless or even helpful species to help attract their their prey—Aesop’s fable about a wolf donning sheep’s clothing was well-observed. Gov. Sarah Palin's critics had better hope she doesn't sick America's newest brand of super hero on their heels. A group of women in Yuma say Palin is absolutely right, that no one has the same driven bark and protective bite as a hockey mom hustling to care for her brood. These ladies say they cheered Wednesday when the vice presidential candidate joked during the Republican National Convention that the only difference between hockey moms like herself and pit bulls is lipstick. "We're fierce, loyal and competitive, just as competitive as our kids," said Karen VanDeberg, whose son plays hockey...

PHOENIX - As a general rule, Senator John McCain does not alert the news media when he eats breakfast in Arizona. But on a Monday morning this month, Mr. McCain campaigned in a local diner, after a Sunday stop at his campaign office here, where he urged volunteers to “make sure we get our voters registered, to make sure we are organized.”

A famous Chinese proverb teaches that a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. For Meg Sneed, a 25-year-old Arizona lesbian, journeys to change a thousand hearts begin with a single thought: There's power in sharing personal stories. In 2006, she and other young activists in Soulforce, a gay rights group devoted to the kind of peaceful confrontation practiced by Gandhi and the Rev. Martin Luther King, traveled eight weeks by bus to evangelical colleges to share what it's like to be gay. The next year, Sneed, who was fighting cancer, was weak from chemotherapy but walked...

U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. (the presumptive Republican presidential nominee), is facing questions about his ties to Arizona real estate developers and home builders. DNC Chairman Howard Dean and Arizona Democratic Party spokeswoman Emily Bittner pointed Friday to recent stories by 'The New York Times' and the 'Washington Post' on McCain backing land deals involving SunCor Development Co., Del Webb Corp., and developers Donald Diamond and Fred Ruskin. The deals involved parcels and projects in the Phoenix area, Northern Arizona and Nevada. Republicans dismissed the stories and Democrats' criticism, saying the deals had bipartisan support and were done to benefit...

Arizona blacks: Where's McCain? By JONATHAN MARTIN | 4/8/08 4:38 AM EST Text Size: Oscar Tillman heads the Phoenix area branch of the NAACP and is a former statewide president of the group. He has been a leader of Arizona’s small, tight-knit African-American community for decades. So it comes as something of a surprise to learn the name of one person, over all those years, with whom he has never spoken. It is the state’s senior senator better known these days as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. John McCain, said Tillman, “has pretty well zero relationship with the African-American community...

Another seat on the Arizona Corporation Commission soon may be opening as Republican Kris Mayes announced Tuesday that she is interested in making a run for U.S. Congress in District 1. Mayes' announcement does not come a surprise to most. In the past month, those close to her and her staff have mentioned the run "could be eminent." She has formed an exploratory committee, but has not filed for candidacy listing with the Arizona Clean Elections Commission. Former Arizona Congressman Matt Salmon and Malcolm Barrett, chairman of the National Propane Gas Association and a Prescott native like Mayes, have pledged...

Arizona Republican John Shadegg will give up his House seat at the end of the year — the latest in a string of retirements in the minority-party caucus. Shadegg said battling for conservative principles in the Democratic-led House has become more difficult, and “there are better places for me to fight that fight.” Shadegg left open the possibility of running for the Senate in 2010 if Republican John McCain of Arizona wins his White House bid. “At this point, there isn’t a seat. But the conservative movement gets me out of bed every morning. It’s what I believe in,” Shadegg...

SIERRA VISTA — Long lines and not enough poll workers at one presidential preference polling place in Cochise County are leading officials to find more help, County Elections Officer Tom Schelling said. Precinct 13 at the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church was experiencing problems in processing people who are showing up to vote, Schelling said late Tuesday morning. Only one person was available to check if people are authorized to vote at the polling place at 3225 S. St. Andrews Drive, he said. “We’re trying to find more people to help,” he said. One man left the church’s area claiming...

PHOENIX -- The protesters gather every morning before dawn, monitoring the entrance to a fenced compound called the Macehualli Work Center. They are trying to shut the place down. They wave placards and take photos of anyone driving in to pick up the day laborers who congregate there. They want nothing less than to save America from what they call "the invasion."

PHOENIX -- -- Sen. John McCain's run for the presidency is gaining momentum across the nation, but the campaign is meeting disapproval in one of the most unlikely places: his home turf in Arizona. In a straw poll vote two weeks ago of 721 Republican leaders in Maricopa County, the major population center of the state, a majority ranked McCain as the least acceptable Republican candidate for president. The reason, Republicans say, is his record on illegal immigration. "We feel betrayed and let down by our senior senator," said Russell Pearce, a Republican representative in the statehouse who has written...

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Arizona’s Likely Voters finds that 63% now have a favorable opinion of their senior Senator while only 35% have an unfavorable view. That’s a vast improvement since June when the Senate immigration debate drove McCain’s favorable ratings down to 47% in his home state. At that time, 51% had an unfavorable opinion of him. In September, McCain’s favorable rating was still stuck at 48% and Fred Thompson outperformed the Arizona Senator in general election match-ups in his home state. Now, however, McCain crushes each...
