In February of 2015, it became legal to grow and consume marijuana in Alaska. And, as has happened in Denver and Seattle, crime immediately began to increase after being stable or declining in the pre-legal pot era. According to the FBI's Preliminary Semiannual Uniform Crime Report for the first six months of 2015, the number of violent crimes in Anchorage (the only city reporting for Alaska) increased 34% compared to the same period in 2014. Murders were up 167%, and aggravated assaults increased 32% versus the first six months of 2014.

Sarah Palin called her husband Todd "tough" after he was seriously injured in a snowmobile accident. She wasn't kidding: a source tells PEOPLE that Todd's injuries were so extensive they required six hours of surgery overnight after the crash.

Iditarod officials said a snowmachine attack on two top Iditarod teams has left one dog dead and several injured. Two Rivers musher Aliy Zirkle and Denali Park’s Jeff King reported a snowmachiner repeatedly attempted to harm their dog teams as they traveled to the Yukon River checkpoint of Nulato early Saturday morning. King’s team was struck, according to a press release from the Iditarod Trail Committee, resulting in the death of 3-year-old Nash and non-life threatening injuries to two others: 2-year-old Banjo and 3-year-old Crosby. Early this morning, as Aliy Zirkle (bib #13) was making her way towards the Nulato checkpoint, a snowachiner repeatedly attempted to harm her and her team. One dog received a non-­life threatening injury. Upon arrival at the Nulato checkpoint, Zirkle reported the incident to race officials and a report was filed with the Alaska State Troopers. Alaska instituted a ban on concealed carry sometime after statehood in 1959.  They reformed the law to a shall issue permit system in 1994.  The University of Alaska instituted a no weapons policy in 1995.  Alaska was the first state to restore permitless carry in 2003.  It added a strong pre-emption law forbidding government entities from enacting law more restrictive than state law, about 10 years ago. A bill that would give parents more say in their children’s sex education passed the Alaska Senate on Friday. Senate Bill 89 requires parental permission for public school students prior to sex education classes, and would allow parents to withdraw their children from sex education and standardized testing.
