I just need general advice and links to resources on home schooling. I'm finding the topic a little daunting because I don't know where to begin. My kid is bright and being bullied relentlessly at school. Not by just the kids, but also staff. Admin do nothing because of nepotism, etc. He's 8th grade level, now. I'll leave this here and catch up later to replies. I know there are many FReepers here who home school and would appreciate feedback. I just don't know where to begin and I'm terribly disorganized. I'll make dinner and BBL. Thanks!

A huge thunderstorm ripped through here four days ago. It blew out my TV and my computer. My small town only has a Walmart and an Office Depot. I would prefer to go buy a new computer at Walmart. I'm thinking a laptop would be a better purchase. I have no idea how to install it on my own. I'm thinking of asking a clerk to come home with me to install it and I will pay him $50. I need this new computer installed before the start of our FReepathon on July 1 I will also need one that...

I have a chance to apply internally for a position as US Postal Police Officer. I find the opportunity fascinating and exciting. Right now I have a steady schedule as a postal clerk in Wichita, Kansas, after downgrading from supervisor not long ago. Recently divorced, I have few ties other than immediate family. None of the positions available are anywhere near Wichita, and looking at the vast, truth-telling population of Free Republic, I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile to change positions and move to any of the following locations that have opened up. San Francisco, CA Los Angeles, CA...
  • Bill would lift ban on VA doctors advising patients on medical marijuana

A new bill aims to make it easier for veterans to talk to their doctors about medical marijuana. The Veterans Equal Access Act, introduced Thursday by Reps. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore. and Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., would lift a ban Veterans Affairs doctors face that prevents them from giving opinions or recommendations on medical marijuana to veterans living in states where its use is permitted. "Post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury are just as damaging and harmful as any injuries that are visible from the outside," Blumenauer said in a statement, according to the Huffington Post. “Sometimes even more so because of...

Billionaire investor Mark Cuban has some advice for the Republican Party: Drop the social issues. "If I was going to give guidance to the Republican Party, ... I'd say, 'Stay completely out of social issues," Cuban said Tuesday morning on CNBC's "Squawk Box." The "Shark Tank" star and Dallas Mavericks owner said this would allow the GOP to communicate a strong message on the economy. "If you stay out of social issues, then the conversation from that side will only be about economics, and business, and growing business, and ideas," he said. "It should be easy!" Cuban also said he...

Some bits of wisdom! And a note to my friends and compatriots: I often hear people say that although they had lived their lives, and were fairly satisfied, they wouldn't want to live it over again. I disagree. I would like to do it all over again, but with more wisdom and a better sense of purpose. I wouldn't change very much, but I would not waste so much precious time, and I would do everything a lot better. And now an admonition: Always remember; when the issue is great, when the future of society depends on you, when it...

All of us have learned from sad experience by doing something we were warned by somebody older and wiser not to do. What's your regret? I'll start.... When I turned 18 (then the legal drinking age), my father said to me, "Son, NEVER get drunk on wine." About 2 years later, I learned how very right he was! I have since passed the same wise advice to my son.

All across America at this time of year, there are high school and college students graduating from our education system and heading into the real world. Here's a little advice for them from outside the liberal cocoon their teachers have weaved over the last few years. 1) You were not born special: Everyone is not a winner. Everyone is not a good person. Everyone doesn't deserve to have high self-esteem. Everyone doesn't deserve success. So, what about you? Are you special? Are you a winner? Do you deserve success? That remains to be seen because everything you've done in school...

The advice books written around the turn of the 20th century to teach women to make men happy are plentiful. Advice books in the same vein for men are rare. But in 1883, a Methodist minister named George W. Hudson wrote one such "advice for men" book—The Marriage Guide for Young Men: A Manual of Courtship and Marriage. It was self-published, perhaps due to perceived lack of interest in marriage manuals for men. Or maybe because traditional publishers couldn’t handle all the hard-core truth the Reverend was going to throw down.
  • DNC Gives Out Advice to Women: “Be Less Polite,” “Don’t Get that Tattoo,” “Go Easy”

In what was first called "advice to my younger self," then later "advice from some of those women" to the average girl, the DNC released confusing and often contradictory "advice" to young Democrat women. The advice specifically comes from DNC Women's Caucus Members. Some of the advice is common sense, and probably should be followed by both men and women: "be brave," for example. Then some is a bit random. The DNC itself makes specific note that "we all need a good pair of stretchy pants sometimes." Again, the DNC calls this advice for women in the Democratic party. The...

MOSCOW, March 20 (RIA Novosti) – Making Ukraine a federal state is the only way to stabilize situation in the country, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday. “We want to understand, who exactly will represent legitimate authorities in Kiev. In this regard we have a proposal: first of all, a constitutional reform should be held, so that interests of all Ukrainian citizens and regions are respected. This is the only basis for forming legitimate authorities, legislative and executive, central and regional,” Lavrov told members of the lower chamber of the Russian parliament. “And we are convinced that the...

If I were a young person, I would think twice about signing up for ObamaCare. Besides the healthcare.gov website being a huge hassle, here are some reasons to just BLOW IT OFF: --It is not worth the price you are being charged to pay for yourself AND us older folks who don’t need your help, AND pay for a lot of things you don’t need that are required in ObamaCare policies (like sex-change operations). --Not only are you paying for old people’s healthcare, you will be paying an estimated 18% more for insurance over your lifetime. It’s a bad deal!...

Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.) are seeking to stay relevant in the debate over ObamaCare, but they might as well be shouting in a hurricane. A hurricane named Ted. During this month’s fiscal standoff, Sen. Ted Cruz attracted the most attention of any possible White House hopeful on Capitol Hill. GOP strategists say Cruz, a freshman Republican from Texas, has seized the role of Tea Party standard-bearer, giving him an edge with conservative activists. The grassroots army Cruz built over the last few months could help him in Iowa and other primary battlegrounds if he decides to...

    2. “That just isn’t possible.” Always speak to your boss in terms of what can be done. For instance, rather than saying “We can’t get this done by Friday,” say “We could definitely get this done by Monday, or if we brought in some freelance help, we could meet the Friday deadline.” When you talk to your boss, think in terms of solving problems for her, not in terms of putting problems on her plate. 6. “It’s not my fault.” Are you a whiny 8-year-old or a take-charge professional? Assume responsibility and take steps to fix a problem that you...
