The Diana DeGette Guide to Gun Safety Posted Thu, 04/04/2013 - 11:38 By Rep. Diana DeGette In light of the on-going gun debate, as a service to my constituents I have drafted a quick guide to gun safety. It explains how guns work as I understand it and offers some commonsense tips. HOW GUNS WORK At right, you can see a diagram of a magazine. Magazines are ammunition, they’re bullets. If you ban them in the future, the number of these high capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and...

O’Mara, on April 04, 2013, filed a Writ of Certiorari asking the Florida District Court of Appeal for the Fifth District to overturn Judge Nelson’s decision denying a deposition for Benjamin Crump. A writ of certiorari is simply the legal vehicle for asking a higher court to overturn the decision of a lower court. This is an interesting step. Lawyers generally do not, while a case is in progress, do such things. They want to stay on the good side of the presiding judge, and few things anger most judges more than having their rulings appealed, particularly if those rulings...

Explanation: No sudden, sharp boundary marks the passage of day into night in this gorgeous view of ocean and clouds over our fair planet Earth. Instead, the shadow line or terminator is diffuse and shows the gradual transition to darkness we experience as twilight. With the Sun illuminating the scene from the right, the cloud tops reflect gently reddened sunlight filtered through the dusty troposphere, the lowest layer of the planet's nurturing atmosphere. A clear high altitude layer, visible along the dayside's upper edge, scatters blue sunlight and fades into the blackness of space. This picture actually is a single...

A new piece of filmmaking gear was just announced that could completely re-invent the complex process of camera stabilization. It's currently being tested and endorsed by Vincent LaForet, who's given us a little taste of what it's capable of. The product is called MĹŤVI, created by Freefly, longtime maker of crazy camera-drone equipment and stabilizers. LaForet is presenting a short film and behind-the-scenes video to illustrate its abilities, which consists of a completely custom-made gimbal and 3-axis gyroscope that digitally stabilizes the camera (a Canon 1DC in this case). North Korea’s dictator, Kim Jung Un is playing a mean game of chicken with South Korea and the United States. This is how chubby little dictators behave to gain the attention of world leaders and garner support—grudging or otherwise– of their own populace. Most likely he is in a power play with older military leaders in a political battle royal to keep himself in power. Nukes This week the tyrant-in-training authorized the North Korean military to use untested nukes against American bases in South Korea. In poker this is called a bluff. The sudden shortage of ammo available just isn’t making sense. Yes, DHS has made substantial purchases (~1.6b rounds) but when one looks at the numbers, this alone cannot account for such dramatic shortages of supply. Just estimating, for purpose of an example, 1.6b rounds is a huge purchase but how does this break out? 1.6b divided by 50 rounds/box equals 32m boxes. There are 50 states and for purposes of simplifying this example, say there are 50 cities in each state and 5 stores (outlets) per city. This computes to 125,000 total outlets in the US. If one divides 32m...

WASHINGTON - Could Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey be a Republican bridge who helps secure a deal on background checks on guns? His office confirmed Friday that Toomey, a strong Second Amendment advocate, was in discussions on pending gun bills that have struggled to gain traction with Republicans and many pro-gun Democrats in the Senate. "Sen. Toomey and his staff are talking to a lot of folks - both in Pennsylvania and in the Capitol - on the issue of guns in the hopes that we get to an approach that works," his spokeswoman wrote in an e-mail. There was no...

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem The Prophet Jonah Chapter Two 1. Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the fish’s belly. 2. And he said: “ I cried out to the LORD because of my affliction, And He answered me. “ Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice. 3. For You cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the floods surrounded me; All Your billows and Your waves passed over me. 4. Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I...

The Collision of God and Sin ". . . who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree . . ." —1 Peter 2:24 The Cross of Christ is the revealed truth of God’s judgment on sin. Never associate the idea of martyrdom with the Cross of Christ. It was the supreme triumph, and it shook the very foundations of hell. There is nothing in time or eternity more absolutely certain and irrefutable than what Jesus Christ accomplished on the Cross— He made it possible for the entire human race to be brought back into a...

The Defense Department came under fire Thursday for a U.S. Army Reserve presentation that classified Catholics and Evangelical Protestants as “extremist” religious groups alongside al Qaeda and the Ku Klux Klan. The presentation detailed a number of extremist threats within the U.S. military, including white supremacist groups, street gangs, and religious sects. The presentation identified seventeen religious organizations in a slide titled “religious extremism.” They include al Qaeda, Hamas, the Filipino separatist group Abu Sayyaf, and the Ku Klux Klan, which the slide identifies as a Christian organization. “Religious extremism is not limited to any single religion, ethnic group, or...

April 5, 2013 (American Life League) - When we look around our country and see people mired in actions that hurt or maim themselves, put their health in jeopardy, or kill an innocent baby, we must wonder where all the morals have gone. We see an increase in sexually transmitted diseases, an increase in the use of emergency contraceptives, and a decrease in the respect for life. This fog is covering us and, unless we take actions to clear it, will envelop and choke us. Many were in disbelief when a Planned Parenthood lobbyist from Florida, Alisa LaPolt Snow, suggested...

**SNIP** Gore outlines a conflict in which the "global mind", an educated world population united by the internet, is pitted against Earth Inc, global corporations with no national allegiance, which cannot see past the next quarter, alongside politicians who look no farther than the next set of growth figures. Quarterly capitalism he calls it, which measures profit and forgets to measure consequences like pollution. Jobs are no longer being outsourced abroad, they are being robo-sourced, he says - lost forever to technology. He talks not so much in complete paragraphs as draft chapters, fizzing with ideas and references, from Burma...

The Internal Revenue Service is collecting a lot more than taxes this year--it's also acquiring a huge volume of personal information on taxpayers' digital activities, from eBay auctions to Facebook posts and, for the first time ever, credit card and e-payment transaction records, as it expands its search for tax cheats to places it's never gone before.

Increasing potassium in our diets as well as cutting down on salt will reduce blood pressure levels and the risk of stroke, research in the British Medical Journal suggests. One study review found that eating an extra two to three servings of fruit or vegetables per day - which are high in potassium - was beneficial. A lower salt intake would increase the benefits further, researchers said. A stroke charity said a healthy diet was key to keeping stroke risk down. While the increase of potassium in diets was found to have a positive effect on blood pressure, it was...
