  • Gov. Christie: Americans need to have a 'national discussion' about gun control

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie said tonight that gun control is one of several issues that must be examined to prevent tragedies like Friday’s school shooting in Connecticut. On New Jersey 101.5 FM’s "Ask the Governor," Christie said Americans should engage in a "national discussion" about gun control, as well as the stigma associated with mental health treatment and violence in the media. "What role does the media play in terms of the violence we see on television and the movies? And the violent video games that I think desensitize our children to the real effects of violence. So I...

Over the course of Obama's first four years as president, we watched him "evolve" from a zealous, I-will-slow-the-rise-of-the-oceans climate change champion to a remarkably quiet almost-bystander on the whole debate. Now that his second term is secure, I’m sure we can expect that at least his rhetoric on the subject will once again reach much more vociferous levels, via The Hill: President Obama has identified climate change as one of his top three priorities in his second term after coming under fire from environmentalists for giving the issue short shrift during the campaign. The president, in an interview for TIME's Person...

As the world continues to search for answers to the senseless violence and police say they are leaving no stone unturned, reports surface on the links between certain psychiatric medications and homicidal violence. The Washington Post has reported that a neighbor of Adam Lanza, the suspected shooter in the Sandy Hook Elementary School killings, said that Lanza was on some form of medication. Police have issued search warrants to determine if Lanza was being treated with any drugs prescribed for mental illness. Police have said that so far a search of the Lanza home has turned up no such medications....

Compare the rate of murder by gun in the United States to the rate in any other advanced industrial nation, and you’re forced to draw one of two conclusions: Either there are far more homicidal people in this country than just about anyplace else on Earth, or far more guns. We must either be home to more people who succumb to murderous rage or who kill out of the coldest of calculations, or it’s easier to pick up a gun and start shooting here than in any comparable country. And yet, I’ve never heard even the staunchest gun advocate make...

More than 40,000 people have been slaughtered in Syria and the death toll rises daily. The European Union does not appear to be particularly concerned. North Korea's rulers have launched a three-stage rocket, moving closer to their goal of developing a nuclear-tipped ICBM, and they're sharing nuclear weapons technology with the world's leading sponsors of terrorism in Iran. The EU does not seem to be worrying about that, either. Israel is considering building homes on barren hills adjacent to Jerusalem. The EU's 27 foreign ministers said they were "deeply dismayed," and warned Israel of unspecified consequences if the plan is...

JRR Tolkien’s debut prose fiction The Hobbit (1937) may at first glance appear simple, particularly when compared with the epic grandeur and gravity of what was to follow in The Lord of the Rings (published in three volumes between 1954 and 1955), yet it should not be underestimated. The Hobbit is an exciting, fast-moving and witty novel, featuring an unlikely, quintessentially English middle-class hero none too keen on adventures: “Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Givat Hamatos, across the pre-1967 Green Line between southern Jerusalem and Bethlehem, will be the first new discrete settlement created since 1997. Critics say it will become part of a chain of settlements in the area, further impeding access between the two biblical cities. Yesterday, at lunchtime, I heard a man outside one of the shrines in the centre of town saying that he hadn't felt like this since 9/11. This is not a pivotal moment on that scale, but it could be important nonetheless. President Barack Obama has implied that he will look at the issue of gun control after 20 children and seven women were killed by lone gunman Adam Lanza on Friday in Newtown, Connecticut. The Second Amendment to the US Constitution protects the right of citizens "to keep and bear arms". However, restrictions on gun ownership vary by state. Figures from the United Nations show the US sitting fifth in the world in terms of people murdered by a firearm, with 9,960 such homicides in 2010. But in part this is because of its large population: the US falls to 26th,...

The Sandy Hook school shooting has reignited the debate around violent video games, with even some of the games' designers claiming the 'ultraviolence has to stop.' Gunman Adam Lanza, 20, was reportedly 'obsessed' with military shooters' game Call of Duty - which features assault weapons similar to the Bushmaster AR-15, one of three guns he used to slaughter his mother, Nancy, and 26 innocent children and school staff on Friday. But even before the latest massacre, gamers were beginning to voice concerns that modern offerings were 'fetishizing violence' and that they would 'ultimately cause (the country) trouble.' At this year's...

An Iranian state-run media outlet reported on an Arizona businessman's claim that Israel is behind the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. PressTV, Iran's 24-hour English language news network, cited an interview with Michael Harris, who said that the massacre was an Israeli mission to teach President Obama a lesson. Adam Lanza, the man police have identified as the killer, was made the "fall guy." Harris, who PressTV identified as a former GOP candidate for governor of Arizona, publicly associates with neo-Nazi groups, according to the Washington Post. In the interview, Harris cites what PressTV calls inconsistencies in the "cover...
  • Banks Seek a Shield in Mortgage Rules

As regulators complete new mortgage rules, banks are about to get a significant advantage: protection against homeowner lawsuits. The rules are meant to help bolster the housing market. By shielding banks from potential litigation, policy makers contend that the industry will have a powerful incentive to make higher quality home loans. But some banking and housing specialists worry that borrowers are losing a critical safeguard. Industries rarely get broad protection from consumer lawsuits, and banks would seem unlikely candidates given the range of abuses revealed during the housing bust. “A lot of bad things are done in the name of...
  • Looming Threats No Match for Partisan Politics

Sixteen months ago, partisan politics allowed the once-unthinkable to happen -- Standard & Poor's downgraded the U.S. credit rating after repeated warnings that the unprecedented move was forthcoming if elected officials didn't get their act together. They didn't. Apparently no looming threat is big enough or frightening enough to break the partisan logjam that seems to fuel the Washington, D.C., political cycle. The consensus among non-partisan observers is that this latest round of political theater will almost certainly result in another Band-Aid, a temporary fix that will stave off the worst of the potential economic fallout while providing maximum political...

"Space Battleship Yamato," a classic sci-fi anime series of the 1970's with international fandom, movies and spin-offs, is being reintroduced with a series reboot for 2012. The reviews from the international anime crowd have been astounding. Packaged in four-episode "mini-packs," and hitting select Japanese movie screens, "Yamato 2199" is now being released on BluRay (compatible with US players). Currently, Amazon is selling select Bluray episode packages. Bandi is selling collector figurines and models for the general public. No news as of yet if Film distributor Shochiku is seeking US media distributors at this time. If sales are any indication, the...

Full Title: Independent report: “systemic failures and leadership and management deficiencies” at State led to Benghazi deaths Congress now has the Accountability Review Board report on the Benghazi terrorist attack that killed four Americans, including the first US Ambassador murdered in 33 years, and it’s easy to see why the State Department contemplated keeping it under wraps.  The ARB rips the State Department from the top down all the way to the late Ambassador Chris Stevens — and unequivocally states that there never was a protest in front of the consulate, as the Obama Administration insisted for more than a...
