“A self-inflicted wound” to a struggling economy. “Ham-handed cuts” nobody thought would actually happen. “The big, dumb spending cuts that no one wants.” Those are just three descriptions given to the looming federal budget reductions that are scheduled to take effect Jan. 2, 2013, unless Congress stops them. If they are enacted, more than $1.2 trillion would be cut from federal spending in the next ten years, including nearly $110 billion next year alone. The specter has produced jitters around the country. Heightening anxiety is the broader, so-called “fiscal cliff,” a term that adds in the tax cuts also set...

Suicide is the cause of more deaths than car crashes, according to an alarming new study. The number of people who commit suicide in the U.S. has drastically increased while deaths from car accidents have dropped, making suicide the leading cause of injury death. Suicides via falls or poisoning have risen significantly and experts fear that there could be many more unaccounted for, particularly in cases of overdose. Suicides are terribly under-counted,' said Ian Rockett, author of the study, published on Thursday in the American Journal of Public Health. 'I think the problem is much worse than official data would...

They are sending missionaries to eastern Germany. A recent study called Beliefs About God Across Time and Countries found that 52.1% of people asked whether they believed in God identified themselves as atheists. This compared with only 10.3% in western Germany. Indeed, the survey was unable to find a single person under the age of 28 in eastern Germany who believed in God. Obviously there are some – I think I may have even met some once – but the survey was unable to find them. On the face of it this is an extraordinary finding and it is something...

(SNIP) "Promised Land," starring Matt Damon, Frances McDormand, John Krasinski, Rosemarie DeWitt and Hal Holbrook, is the fracking (anti-fracking?) movie shot in Western Pennsylvania earlier this year. In an interview in June after shooting finished, Krasinski told the Post-Gazette the film is about fighting for American identity and pride and the original script was about wind power, later changed. It's easy to think that by 2007, most professional sports teams had figured out this whole Internet thing. Yeah, funny thing about that, since one of the great examples of dot-com incompetence occurred back then, as Jerry Jones and his Dallas Cowboys organization could've snagged Cowboys.com and been operating under that domain for all these years. Now? Not so much.

After all the hoopla, the Apple’s iPhone debut on Friday more than lived up to expectations, with analysts estimating as many as 10 million sales by tomorrow and more than 130 million by the end of the year.. But there is a surprising quirk in the numbers. More than half of American mobile subscribers — 55.5 percent — are now owners of smartphones of all types, but for white people, the numbers make up just 45 percent, the lowest of any ethnic group, new findings from Nielsen show. Sixty-six percent of Asians, 56 percent of Hispanics and 55 percent of...

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) on Friday accused President Barack Obama of ushering in a second Ottoman Empire in the Middle East through his foreign policy. Speaking on the House floor, Gohmert accused the Obama administration of allowing Iran to influence Iraq by pulling U.S. troops out, and suggested the attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions in the Middle East and North Africa are the result of waning American influence from that decision, The Hill reported. “Thank you President Barack Hussein Obama. This will be quite a legacy for you,” Gohmert said. “I‘m not one of those who says he’s not a...

Politico is reporting that Microsoft accidentally delved into the world of partisan politics over the weekend after tweeting out a message insulting conservative author and syndicated columnist Ann Coulter. In response to liberal economist Robert Reich’s tweet that he would be visiting his granddaughter and sitting on a panel with Coulter over the weekend, the tech giant’s official Twitter feed reportedly responded: “@RBReich your granddaughter’s level of discourse and policy > those of Ann Coulter.” Here is a purported image of the tweet: (see link) The tweet was deleted immediately, according to Politico, and was accidentally written by one of...

President Barack Obama likened Israeli pressure on him to draw a line in the sand over Iran's nuclear ambitions as noise he tries to ignore, according to remarks aired Sunday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently urged the United States to establish what he called a "red line" regarding Tehran's nuclear program beyond which the United States would be compelled to act. Obama, interviewed for Sunday's edition of "60 Minutes" on broadcaster CBS, said he understands and agrees with Netanyahu's insistence that Iran not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons as this would threaten both countries, the world in general,...

A leading House Republican criticized the Obama administration Sunday for running ads in Pakistan denouncing the anti-Islamic film that allegedly sparked violent and deadly protests across the Middle East and North Africa, calling the roughly $70,000 project a “horrible idea.” “I think it was a horrible idea,” said Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. “It gave credibility and it gave a permission slip to Al Qaeda, to Pakistani officials.” The ad features President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton denouncing the 14-minute Internet film trailer “The Innocence of Muslims,” purportedly by South California filmmaker Nakoula...

n an interview to air tonight on CBS's 60 Minutes, President Barack Obama will refer to Israel's concern over Iran's march toward a nuclear program as "noise." And I am going to block out -- any noise that's out there," Obama says, according to AFP. AFP also reports that Obama will say that "he understands and agrees with Netanyahu's insistence that Iran not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons as this would threaten both...

The Obama campaign produced a poster of an American flag, with Obama’s “O” symbol replacing the field of stars, as an item of campaign merchandise, selling for $35. The image was tasteless at best. It is hard to imagine any other politician arrogant enough to remake the flag in his own image: Barack Obama, however, has never been one to be deterred by bad taste. The larger problem was that, as many pointed out, the flag bore an uncanny resemblance to this grisly photograph taken at the American consulate in Benghazi: So the Obama campaign has quietly ditched the flag...

Mitt Romney keeps telling Ohioans they are worse off than four years ago — but a majority of you are not buying it. Six weeks before Election Day, President Barack Obama holds a 51 to 46 percent lead in the state over his Republican challenger, according to the most recent Ohio Newspaper Poll of likely voters. The poll, taken between Sept. 13 and Tuesday and jointly paid for by the eight largest circulating newspapers in Ohio, including The Repository, was conducted by the Institute for Policy Research at the University of Cincinnati. The results are similar to those found in...

In late March 2008, on a local New York City show called “Inside City Hall,” the venerable African-American entrepreneur and politico, Percy Sutton, told host Dominic Carter how he was asked to help smooth Barack Obama’s admission into Harvard Law School 20 years earlier. The octogenarian Sutton calmly and lucidly explained that he had been “introduced to [Obama] by a friend.” The friend’s name was Dr. Khalid al-Mansour, and the introduction had taken place about 20 years prior. Sutton described al-Mansour as “the principal adviser to one of the world’s richest men.” The billionaire in question was Saudi prince Al-Waleed...

In a move that could alter the way that breast cancers are treated, researchers have redefined the disease into four main classes and determined that one type of breast cancer has more in common with an aggressive form of ovarian cancer than other breast cancers. The finding that a form of breast cancer may be genetically similar to a type of ovarian cancer underscores a new way thinking about cancer that moves away from defining cancers by the organ of origin. The findings are the result of the largest and most comprehensive study of the genetics of breast cancer to...

'Occupy Unmasked' Trumps MSM, Scores Big in Limited Releaseby Breitbart News 23 Sep 2012, 12:58 PM PDT The mainstream media did all it could to white wash the violence swirling around the Occupy Wall Street movement as well as its anti-capitalist support system. Enter "Occupy Unmasked," the new documentary which did the work most journalists refused to do. And the people were clearly eager to hear the truth behind the movement. The film earned an impressive per-screen average of $11,000 on four screens over the weekend, the third highest average of any film in release, and those numbers could rise...

Anyone who has not seen Steve Flesher's What Romney Must Do should read it immediately. His major point is that the Republicans make a huge mistake by insulting "the 47%." Sure, there are welfare queens who barter food stamps for color TVs, serial collectors of unemployment, etc. etc. Similarly, there are incompetent teachers who rely on the union as a shield, and public employees who retire on the job. But such parasites are uncommon. Most people who have become dependent on the government would rather not be. Because they have been reduced to a state of desperation, it is not...

This site is called Mes Aynak and is nothing short of awe-inspiring: a massive walled-in Buddhist city featuring massive temples, monasteries, and thousands of Buddhist statues that managed to survive looters and the Taliban. All of the temples, monasteries, statues as well as the Bronze age material will all be destroyed by a Chinese government-owned company called China Metallurgical Group Corporation (MCC). Review by Florence King of Vagina: A New Biography, by Naomi Wolf If you thought there was nothing new to say about female sexuality, you don’t know Naomi Wolf’s gift for saying nothing new about anything. In her 1991 bestseller, The Beauty Myth, she revealed that attractive women are luckier than homely women. A human shoehorn, she used her subsequent fame to ease herself into the role of political consultant in the 2000 presidential race and reveal that Al Gore has the personality of a tree.

Overall in all 12 states, it shows Obama advancing significantly, from a 1-point deficit in August, 47-46 percent, to a 5-point lead, 49-44 percent. Greece rebuffed a report in Der Spiegel magazine on Sunday that claimed the country’s budget shortfall is about 20 billion euros, rather than the 13.5 billion euros Athens is discussing with the troika. The Finance Ministry said that the budget shortfall as it stands will be covered by the 11.5 billion euros in cuts and 2 billion euros in new tax measures that it is negotiating with the troika. Meanwhile, Kathimerini understands that a hardening in the stance of the International Monetary Fund and its representative in the troika, Poul Thomsen, was behind the Greek government’s inability to reach an agreement...

The political fortunes of Democrats Bob Kerrey and President Barack Obama appear to be tied together in Nebraska — and that's bad news for Kerrey and his comeback bid for U.S. Senate, according to The World-Herald Poll. Kerrey and Obama each trailed his respective Republican opponent by about 10 percentage points in a statewide poll of 800 registered voters. The margin was even worse for Kerrey when the poll was narrowed to likely voters, with the former governor and two-term senator trailing Republican State Sen. Deb Fischer by 16 percentage points — 56 percent to 40 percent.

Iran could launch a pre-emptive strike on Israel if it was sure the Jewish state was preparing to attack it, a senior commander of its elite Revolutionary Guards was quoted as saying on Sunday. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, a brigadier general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, made the comments to Iran's state-run Arabic language Al-Alam television. "Iran will not start any war but it could launch a pre-emptive attack if it was sure that the enemies are putting the final touches to attack it," Al-Alam said, paraphrasing the military commander. Hajizadeh said any attack on Iranian soil could trigger "World...

There has been numerous headwinds to a housing (and commercial real estate) recovery. One is doggedly slow economic growth. Another is doggedly high unemployment rates. But there is another headwind that is not talked about for housing and real estate in general: taxmageddon or the upcoming single largest tax increase in American history. Simply put, housing consumption will be reduced in Federal taxes increase. But this is occurring just as housing is beginning to stabilize in many parts of the country. Americans for Tax Reform provide a nice summary of the tax tsunami that is about to hit (unless Congress...
