Best Christmas Song
N/A ^

Posted on 12/12/2001 7:29:45 AM PST by 7thson

I read through the thread today for Best Conservative Rock Song and it started me thinking on some of the best Christmas songs. On the way in to work this morning, the oldies station I listen to - WBIG in DC - played HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS by Brooklyn Bridge. It was accupula (probably misspelled) and it just blew me away. The first time I heard that version. Anyway - what is your favorite Christmas song. My favorites are -

RUN RUDOLPH RUN

I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

THE CHRISTMAS SONG

BLUE CHRISTMAS (by ELvis)

JINGLE BELL ROCK

I have others but I would like to see what you people like.

My favorite is "Angels We Have Heard On High" I think that's the name of the song.

Sarah McLauchlan and Bare Naked Ladies did a medley of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings a year or two ago. What makes it one of my favorites, other than the performance, was the fact that these two contemporary artists took two Christian carols and not only retained all references to God and Jesus but seemed to go out of their way to make sure those references were part of the recording.

Other than that I'm not a big Christmas Carol person. My wife is and she likes the two Oak Ridge Boys Christmas albums.

Christmas on the Block. Alan Mann Band 1984. Most Philly people will know this song instantly.

Anything Rebecca St. James plays. She has a website where you can hear her music here. About halfway down the page are her Christmas songs. Try 'One Small Child' - it's a great rendition.

Oh, and anything by Mannheim Steamroller.

Check out "Christmas Caravan," the Christmas album of Squirrel Nut Zippers. One of the best secular Christmas albums out there. For something traditional and truly wonderful, try John Rutter's albums.

I've got a lot of really strong feelings, convictions about CHRISTmas. Me, I would rule out all the ones you mentioned as not being CHRISTmas songs.

My favorite CHRISTmas songs would be:

O Little Town of Bethlehem
Silent Night, Holy Night
Hark! the Herald Angels Sing
For Unto Us a Child Is Born (Handel's Messiah)

Dan
To Tell the Truth, Virginia...

This one was a favorite in Infantry School at Ft. Benning, GA.:

Sniper's Wonderland

Through the sand

He was walkin'

Through my sights

I was stalkin'

Lock and load another round

B*****d hits the ground

Walkin' in a sniper's wonderland!

In the market, there's a lady

In her arms, there's a baby

Lock and load another round

Baby hits the ground

Walkin' in a sniper's wonderland!

In the village

We can set a Claymore

Set it to go off

At half past twelve

Kill the Muslim b*****ds

While they're sleeping

And send their zealous souls

Straight to Hell!

Later on

Rape and Pillage

As we burn

Down the village

Lock and load another round

Village hits the ground

Walkin' in a sniper's wonderland!
