WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf ordered an emergency redeployment of the country's nuclear arsenal to at least six secret new locations and reorganized military oversight of the nuclear forces, the Washington Post said in its Sunday edition.

Quoting "senior officials" in Pakistan, the newspaper reported that Musharraf took these steps "in the weeks since Pakistan joined the U.S. campaign against terrorism" to protect Pakistan's nuclear weapons from theft or attack.

The Pakistan military began relocating critical nuclear weapons components within two days of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, the newspaper said.

Musharraf created a Strategic Planning Division within the nuclear program, headed by a three-star general, amid a shuffle of top Pakistani military and intelligence leaders hours before U.S. bombing of Afghanistan began on October 7, the Post said.

General Khalid Kidwai is now directing operational security of the country's nuclear sites and weapons, the Post said.

The general has deployed more troops and antiaircraft batteries in sensitive locations and has supervised relocation of nuclear devices, missiles and aircraft, the Post said.

Hope they weren't moved to a cave in Afghanistan...

It would be close to impossible for Musharraf to have a completely devoted military command without Taliban infiltration. After all, where DID the Taliban come from?

I have read that during 1999 there was an understanding between Pakistan and the Taliban to move some of their nukes to the relative safety of Afghanistan.
