Les bombardements anglo-américains sur l'Afghanistan ont commencé à 18h15 (heure française), dimanche 7 octobre 2001. George W. Bush, a confirmé , dans un discours à la nation à 18h50, que les Etats-Unis et la Grande-Bretagne avaient entamé des frappes militaires "ciblées". Les forces armées anglo-américaines ont lancé une première offensive sur Kaboul, Jalalabad, Kandahar et Hérat suivie par une seconde vague sur la capitale afghanel. La France, l'Allemagne, l'Australie et le Canada, entre autres, se sont engagés à participer à l'action de représailles militaires aux attentats anti-américains du 11 septembre.

Le correspondant de la chaîne à Kaboul a fait état de fortes explosions en divers points de la capitale, y compris apparemment dans le centre-ville. Il a ajouté que la DCA des talibans ripostait contre des forces aéroportées.

Cette seconde offensive serait plus importante que les premières déflagrations entendues pendant la première vague quelques heures plus tôt.

le Pakistan. Iran précise que haji Karim Barahouel, commandant militaire de l'opposition afghane basé dans la ville iranienne de Zahedan, près de la frontière, est parti précipitamment sur les lieux des combats. La région est peuplée principalement de Baloutches.
