BEIJING, Sept. 13 -- While average Chinese routinely approach Americans to offer condolences for Tuesday's terrorist attacks....

The state-run press gave the disasters in New York and Washington prominent front-page play for only one day. By today, Beijing Youth News, the most popular newspaper in the capital, relegated the story to inside pages...

China's security services, usually quick to suppress the Internet when it is used for political purposes, have tolerated an avalanche of postings lauding the attacks on message boards. ...

"With the collapse of ______, China's government has embraced nationalism and nationalist causes in its search for new legitimacy." And it's working, not because it's the Chinese, but because those are buttons you can push in people the world over and get a reliable response. THAT's something to think about.

Anyone wanting to gauge the Chinese response should pay a visit to sina.com, where the largest, and probably the freest BBS in PRC is located, instead of few selected cut and paste from a smooth poster who doesn't even want you to read the whole article.

For every anti-American post at sina.com, I see a few posts expressing sympathies, even condemnation of the terrorist act. Among the ones that're indeed anti-American; which are clearly totally brainwashed by the state media on Belgrade Chinese embassy bombing and EP3 incident; most of the posts qualify their opposition to US policies with sympathies for the dead.

j_accuse, you and I both know that China surely won't cause problems down at the Panama Canal, surely not! - but, since China, as of June 16, (just 3 months ago)- was caught smuggling weapons/arms/munitions into Cuba- -there is no way that China would have already smuggled any arms or short-range missiles into Panama...correct??
Isn't that your stand on this Panama issue ie. no way China would smuggle anything, including short-range missile parts into Panama - isn't this your position j_accuse (you too jade?)?

I didn't post 'just part of it' because I don't want you to read the whole article, dipwad. I posted part of it because it is a Washington Post article and we're not supposed to post complete Washington Post articles because of the injunction on FreeRepublic. I was asked to post this by a Chinese national, and it was not intended to reflect on the people over there, but on the Chinese government's manipulation of information. China's government is not entirely unified. There are factions within it who have very different goals. China's government is also involved in Pakistan, with its main highway and with obtaining military use of that big port Pakistan has on that side of India, just as with one in Burma. I suggest only caution. While we're involved with pursuing middle eastern terrorists, we need to be particularly wary of any who might take advantage of our distraction. Lerts have more fun.

damaging my credibility...Nah - could care less -
I'm not even going to bother to ck the links you provided until you agree that it IS POSSIBLE that China has/could bring military hardware ie weapons, munitions, arms and short-range missiles to Panama. Simple as that good lady....all you have to do is agree that it IS POSSIBLE. Go.
