(CNN)—The Army this week selected the company to build its much-anticipated new vehicle to replace the Humvee -- a multibillion dollar contract.

Oshkosh Corporation, located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, won the $6.7 billion contract to produce the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, which will also be used by the Marine Corps.

The initial order will be for 17,000 vehicles, with production set to begin next year. The Army expects to have its first JLTV unit ready to go in fiscal year 2018, according to a release from the Army.

Oshkosh beat out two competitors for the final contract: defense giant Lockheed Martin and AM General, which manufacturers the Humvee. The tactical vehicle-maker will produce a two-seat and four-seat version of the vehicle, as well as a corresponding trailer.

Some of those had a removable fender panel.
They made a good luge in the snow at Camp Fuji.
They get points for that, right?

ISIS will just LOVE these!!!

I am sure they will, and I have no doubt that ISIS will be able to replace their hummers with these new vehicles.

Down at Ft Stewart in 1984 our Duse and Half tore up so motor pool brought us a Goat to use to haul ammo. Our last day in the field we were headed back in close to dark and decided to take it for a joy ride back through the mud. LOL It was different I’ll say that for it.

We also used these POS, the "Gamma-Goat", always breaking down..

I wondered what happened to the Gamma-goat. My unit was involved in testing them in Thailand back in the early '60s.

Oh, the Gamma-goats were an OK vehicle in Germany in the '70's but they had a lot of problems with the 6-wheel drive transaxle system.

They definitely could go over multiple terrain types, slinking and bending like a caterpillar.

>>>They should go back to the old JEEPs

Yep...so that even a small IED or small arms fire can kill the entire crew.

BRILLIANT!

At this point, would those vehicles survive an IED? I think that’s the only practical question here.

Use the LAV in a theatre where that is a concern. Not this compromise.
