(CNN)—The Army this week selected the company to build its much-anticipated new vehicle to replace the Humvee -- a multibillion dollar contract.

Oshkosh Corporation, located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, won the $6.7 billion contract to produce the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, which will also be used by the Marine Corps.

The initial order will be for 17,000 vehicles, with production set to begin next year. The Army expects to have its first JLTV unit ready to go in fiscal year 2018, according to a release from the Army.

Oshkosh beat out two competitors for the final contract: defense giant Lockheed Martin and AM General, which manufacturers the Humvee. The tactical vehicle-maker will produce a two-seat and four-seat version of the vehicle, as well as a corresponding trailer.

Is this the same company that makes “Oshkosh Bagosh” children’s clothing?

I liked the Jeep too, but in this age of islamofascism and IED’s, it’s not practical.

I have a hunch:

Hose it down with AK-47 rounds and see if it still runs and gets the boys out of the area.

If it does, great.

If it doesn’t, it sucks.

I was in during the transition.
The HMMWV did perform well, but they cost seven times as much as a Jeep when they were initially deployed. I thought that their size was a problem in mountainous terrain (Four strong guys could pick up a jeep and turn it around) but that they cornered a lot better than the Jeeps.

I would like to see these new vehicles take over. They look like their design is more in line with armorial the flooring against mines.

The ISIS seem to like them They are driving the earlier models all over the desert. Version 2.0 will be a welcomed upgrade I am sure.

They should go back to the old JEEPs.

Military leadership should be required to ride in old Jeeps when driving through captured territory. That would ensure that the mission of destroying the enemy was completed. Give real armor to soldiers and Marines when they go into battle.

BTW, I don't give a rat's ass about collateral damage when it comes to Muslims.

Humvees were GREAT in the woods. small trees were no problem. However, most of the time, I had to drive them on the road (National Guard weekend duty), and they were loud and uncomfortable.
