What do you think about the movie "The Last Castle"

Posted on 05/27/2015 2:35:02 AM PDT by Krosan

Barring the obvious disbelief about a three star general being sent to jail for a bad command decision during an operation.

Sick, stupid movie made to quench Redford’s engorged ego. He quit being a star after Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. He should stick to something like Salad Dressing like Newman.....

Many things made me uneasy about the movie, but I just can’t put my finger on it. Would you be kind enough to list some of the key things that are plain wrong? I made this thread so I could learn.

Oh, I don’t know. It was so many years ago, I’d have to go back and rewatch it, and that is something I just won’t do.

I just remember at the time the premise was stupid, war hero against a REMF command, their interactions, and a stupid martyr ending.

Sorry to not be of more help.

There is what I think is good balanced review here if you want more timely comment. :0)

I read it. I don’t think this Roger guy is doing a good job. I just can’t understand his sentence:

“If Winter is a disgrace to the uniform, so in a way is Irwin”

This seems just plain wrong. How can anyone come to this conclusion? How is Lt. Gen Irwin a disgrace to the uniform? I can see how Col. Winter is, but ...

Am I just too stupid to see it, because I don’t f*cking see it?

Robert Redford is one of those actors for me that, if I see him involved in any way from producer to actor, I just won’t watch the movie, most especially if the movie involves the military.

It is like having Jane Fonda involved in any kind of military movie.

Same with all the Liam Neelson movies where he kills gazillions of bad guys with handguns, and you read his anti-gun sentiments in the paper the next day. Sigh. I just can’t overlook the hypocrisy anymore.

Perhaps it is the premise of the 3 star “hero” concept. From what little I remember, this “hero” thing was contrived to give Redford as rebel against authority some legitimacy.

If you think about it, It’s like a veiled classic anti-war holdover from the late 60s peace movements. Redford as the ‘hero’ against establishment leading the ‘revolution’. Warden as the classic fake tiger (the establishment), all topped off with Redford’s self-sacrifice in the prison yard. I just didn’t buy it.

My basic problem with the move is the general-hero thing, especially for an actor who was never in the military. It’s just about as realistic to me as Sean Penn’s latest movie with him playing a super warrior spy type, all the while both of them vehemently anti-gun.

Yeah! I got this impression too. It is a propaganda movie that aims to tell young men “Don’t enlist as your Colonels are going to be C****cunts”.

If you really want to see a movie in a somewhat similar vein, watch Burt Lancaster’s “Twilight’s Last Gleaming.”

IMO, it was excellent.

Not to mention that one of the goofiest, liberal douche bags in Hollyweird, Mark Ruffalo, is his co-star in this movie.

Military prison run by nut. Honorable REDford disobeys orders from evil superiors. Military guards are murderers.

My rating: Better to find a freshly painted wall and watch dry

Sean Penn is one of those strange fellows who is wrong about EVERYTHING. Yet he played a terrorist in one of Tom Clancy movies and Mr. Clancy is notorious for being right about everything. In an interview to Playboy magazine nevertheless he told that CIA is wrong and Soviet Union is going to collapse soon. And it did! The last book before he died was about Russia invading the world and USA not being ready for it.

Was there a backlash in America for making such a lying movie?

Late Tuesday night - rather Wednesday ‘morning,’ I saw the Redford film ‘An Unfinished Life.’ With Morgan Freeman. Other good actors.
Kind of a lot going on in the movie - plot-lines galore.

I have always enjoyed Tom Clancy’s work, but IIRC, he is a bit of a liberal, or so I am told.

Sean Penn is just reprehensible. Gah!

I doubt there would be a backlash, as most people recognize it as a work of fiction.

I used to be able to go for it in that light, but I can’t do it anymore.

I don’t expect movie stars to reflect their real views in any case, but when they are so vocal in their real-life views that are diametrically opposed to the values their movies espouse...I just can’t take the dissonance.

I’m not saying he never made a good movie for sure.

This guy was born in 1936 and he made some good movies when he was in his prime: “Any Wednesday” with Fonda, “The Sting,” “Butch & Sundance,” maybe “Three Days of the Condor.”

It’s just so disappointing that so many actors who did great stuff playing apolitical roles got famous and then railed against the establishment (especially when it was Republican) after they achieved their fame. It’s as if they think their fame gives them extra purchase on a belief system above everyone else.

Redford got his fame by playing a pretty boy, Fonda got hers playing the dumb blonde and showing her a$$...many of the others have similar success stories. So they then maximize their egos with all this leftist political crap and when they get old and their money starts dwindling, they all of a sudden want to get back into commercialism and capitalism (Fonda’s workouts, Newman’s Dressing, and all those old fart actors hawking Gold or Reverse Mortgages on TV), it’s disgusting. I just don’t prefer to feed their egos or their bank accounts any more.

Fonda’s only good movie was Barbarella, and only because she showed some skin.

The Last Castle was contrived and implausible, but is marginally watchable on a superficial level as a caper type story of rebellion against abusive authority.

With the benefits of a century of development and experience, Hollywood these days has finely tuned story-telling skills and exceptional technical command over its medium. Pervasive hostility though toward American society and traditional values routinely deprives Hollywood of the ability to explore larger themes and ideas and to connect with the general public.

The result is that movies today may entertain as story and spectacle but rarely give us cause to think after the credits roll -- except for conservatives to grit their teeth at the way that they and American institutions are so often portrayed as bad guys. The public at large mostly ignores or discounts the more blatant bits of propaganda found in the movies.

Notably, the massive demand for content due to cable TV, DVDs, and Internet video services is opening up enough creative space that traditional themes and ideas emerge again and again in what is being seen as a new "golden age" of television. Commercial opportunity is thus fostering greater creative freedom and beginning to undermine Hollywood's Leftist orthodoxy. In time, even the movies will reflect this trend.
