[Vanity] Great Speech, General
Me | Now | Me

I must say, I'm no big fan of General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, but that speech he made at the National Memorial Day Concert was great!

It might have been—but one speech by a General does not so make.

I promptly tuned him out.

Check the speech out on the Internet. Normally, these things are boilerplate. This year, it was good and inspiring.

Best part about it was the distinct lack of Obama.

Yes, that one. They have the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff each year near the end. As someone pointed out, usually, these things are boilerplate. But this particular speech was touching, moving, inspiring.

I hadn't seen the National Memorial Day Concert before this year. Don't ask me why, don't know, but it was moving.

My Pop (87 Years young) is coming over for dinner tonight and we talked about memorial day earlier today and what it means and every year, He always tells me some story about his service I never heard before.

He spent time in the merchant marines in WW2 and then got yanked off a transport on the way to Korea and ended up building roads and airfields in Alaska. He was raised on a farm and knew how to operate heavy equipment. He did see some very limited action in the south pacific at the end of WW2. He doesn't talk about it much, but today is a solemn day for Pop.

Maybe you, or someone on this thread can help me. I’m looking for information about C-130 flight engineers during the Vietnam war. I just attended the funeral of one of them who had been married to a cousin. He was highly decorated, as I suspect all C-130 crews were.
