Sgt. Maj. Of The Marine Corps Says Lower Pay For Marines “Will Raise Discipline”, Make Them Less....

Can you believe this guy? Who is he representing, the president of the troops he is supposed to stand up for? Last time I checked our Marines are plenty disciplined and far from entitled.

. Without it, the PRODUCTIVE work couldn't happen,

I agree ... and that's why I call it "protective". Soldiers, spies, cops, firemen do not "produce" anything, they protect those who do. In this fallen world, their activities are necessary, and honorable. Those who do it well should take pride in a job well done. Those who do other things should recognize the necessity of the protectors ... one of my big objections to leftists and pacifists is that they enjoy the protection, but spit on the protectors. It's hypocritical and dishonorable. In any case, I think the distinction (between protection and production) is worth understanding. That is all.

True. A marine probably would have killed a lot more than four.

The military doesn't want quality soldiers to stay.

On my last cruise, I met a Lt. Col. who retired after 22 years. He said, he wasn't PC enough to make bird, so he retired and took a civilian job.

I understand it, and you. The security product is a business cost most pay. You don't get to have a say directly in that cost. But you will pay what it takes to receive that product, because it makes all other endeavors possible. I also think it is noteworthy that the military 'gov't' service is the only one that can renege on the promises made when the contract was signed. That there are few repercussions because of that is a tribute to those that served. The moral cost to that stance is evident in society today.

So far the record is held by soldiers, on military bases.

I agree that serving is a choice but if you think Service members are overpaid that tells me you never served or served in some cush location and not for 20 years.

Some other poster mentioned that pay had increased over 100% since 2001.

Are you sure today's pay is appropriate given the state of the economy and the reduction in deployments Iraq and Afghanistan? Even in 2010 only 40% of U.S. military had deployed and less than 10% had seen combat.

I'm sure it has happened before in the Corps, but I can't recall an incident where there was a shooting where there was no relationship issue by an AD Marine. Hopefully a Marine would have enough honor to just shoot himself and skip the killing of people unrelated to his gripe.

The military has reached the point where we need to end treating them as all the same.

Someone who spends her entire career as a legal assistant, or dental assistant, does not need the same exact treatment as a career infantryman, who even if he lives, he is living the life of an athlete, and is using himself up physically, not to mention his personal life.

Same logic used in the 30's and Clintoon's 'peace dividend'. While there is much waste in DoD, how many states have had an active foreign military occupation since the US founding? How many foreign military attacks?

Base pay for an E-1 went from $1042 in 01 to a proposed $1532 in 2014. $490 increase, for a non-war in beginning of 2001 to seemingly never-ending war nowadays under the DiC. Less than 5 bills extra of QE'ed cash to fight 0bama's wars? Can't see the 'overspending' for base pay.

When I went in, July 1966, I started as an E-1 at 96 bucks a month.....two years later when I left active USMC duty as an E-4, "salary" was just under $170.

Getting paid to be a jarhead was merely an afterthought...

I kind of agree with you, but before 9/11 the infantryman wasn’t constantly at war. The problem with an approach like that is that this admin would be in charge of the administration. Combat arms is different but the current clowns wouldn’t know the diff between a CA guy and a plastic army man.

I wasn’t referring to anyone being constantly at war, my point was the lifestyle, being in combat arms, and Airborne, Ranger, etc, is a tough life that breaks you down and causes injuries, the life of an athlete.

A secretary can work into her 60s, that isn’t the working lifespan of the warrior class and she is living a normal career life, and going home at night to cable TV and family, and her cats, and eating salads and bean sprouts.

Yeah, but I’m sure that someone would start bitching that a guy in CA is earning too much, no ROI. They are doing it now, and those MOS’s are getting killed. Paying those guys all that easy cash and then they get killed, what a waste of money. Sounds like the town council of the city of Lago, when He rode onto town.

E-1 pay is meaningless since it is basically a probationary pay period.

How long does the average GI remain as an E-1 today, 2 or 3 months?

That was just rambling, and why do you keep going on about getting killed?

Do you not see the difference in the lives and lifestyle and useful longevity of the different MOSs?

A 40 year old Ranger has lived a rough military life, and maintained a physical standard and dangerous training and harsh and unpleasant living conditions that the 8 to 5 secretary hasn’t, even without either of them ever having been in combat.

That was the >4 months pay. Nobody got a 100% base pay raise from 2001 to 2014. And the latest shooter in Fort Hood was a Spec with 15 years of qualifying service 6 in the Army. Marines have a ton of Privates, some of which used to be E-2s at least.

Enlisted same year, same service and they got my buck too. Quonset hut in San Antone but others had the new AC brick quarters.
