Freshman enrollment at Mizzou to take a steep drop in August (PC fallout)
St. Lois Dispatch ^

The University of Missouri-Columbia is expecting at least a 14-percent decline in incoming freshmen this fall, resulting in its smallest class in nearly two decades.

Administrators project that about 4,000 freshmen will enroll in August. That’s down by about 700 students from 2016 and significantly lower than in 2015, when more than 6,000 enrolled.

The shrinking numbers have been tied at least partly to the protests on campus in 2015 that followed reports of racism on and near campus.

The school issued a news release Friday afternoon that mentions the enrollment decline only indirectly.

“A class of this size gives us the ability to think carefully about our long-term enrollment planning,” said Garnett Stokes, interim chancellor, in a prepared statement.

“As part of our planning process, we will be determining the optimum freshman class size for Fall 2018 and future years. This will help us develop and create strong and renewable resources, targeting our students’ best interests as we educate the future leaders of our state and nation.”

The news release focuses on the university’s success in retaining students, with 94 percent re-enrolling. The school also said it is maintaining high academic quality, with incoming freshmen posting an average ACT score of 25.5.

Last week, curators of the University of Missouri four-campus system were alerted to a $9 million expected decline in tuition revenue at Mizzou. At the time, enrollment estimates were not available.

Won’t work. Eliminating football would cost the school far more in donations, TV money, and SEC money than the tuition for 120 or so players.

Eliminate the football team. Use the money to make up for the loss in tuition.

They are so desperate for out-of-state enrollments, there was a huge banner on a building here in downtown Dallas trying to recruit people to go to Mizzou.

That’s down a third in two years. Oops.

Yep. That's not a burble, it's a trend. Academic funding is basically on a four-year cycle, and here, half of that cycle has been a consistent decrease. So it isn't just less money they're having to plan for, it's less and less.

"A class of this size gives us the ability to think carefully about our long-term enrollment planning,” said Garnett Stokes, interim chancellor

It's a lot more than "the ability", it's a cold, ugly necessity. Should a miracle occur and the size of the 2019 freshman class double, they wouldn't be ready to accommodate that because they don't have the money now. Vicious cycle. Or maybe the term "death spiral" will make a comeback.

From the standpoint of a potential student’s parents, it’s a lousy bargain. There are plenty of other state universities that cost less and don’t have all the baggage. I wonder what enrollment is like at Truman State and other second-tier schools in the system.

Let’s see, at Missouri, whites are being told that they are the devil and the root of everything bad and minorities are being told that it’s a horribly racist college/place to be. That’s a fine recruiting pitch.

O/T, but a homeschool organization is hosting a college night in Grapevine on 1/23. I alerted my alma mater’s admissions department. They may send someone down for it.

Why not? You land just one student out of the 1000 seniors attending, that would be a pretty good return on investment.

Knowing how biased this Leftist sinkhole is, no caring parent would send their child there to be abused by its instructors. A diploma from the University of Missouri should be a liability when hiring prospective employees.

There is an overall decline in the numbers of qualified high school graduates throughout the Midwest.

Truman State has about 7,000 students. It is somewhat selective, with an acceptance rate of 67%. Both of my daughters went there and loved it. Mizzou’s bigger concern is Missouri State, which had its second largest enrollment ever this year at 21,000 students. My son did very well there. Another school coming on strong is my alma mater, Southeast Missouri State.

The football team didn’t go on strike but they sure played like they were

It looked like the Gators went on strike when they played Mizzou. Ditto for Tennessee.

In other words, there are plenty of good choices in-state for Missouri students.

J-school enrollment is down. Who would want to join that profession?

It would be easier to make a list of schools to attend like Hillsdale.

Berkely is very strong in the basic sciences and engineering. At least it was I. The past. Outstanding law school too. Yes more than a fair share of crazies too.
