Libertarian Party’s Gary Johnson thinks there’s a good case for banning cigarettes
POLITICO ^ | September 15, 2016 | Ben Birnbaum

There had also been an eye-opening moment on the streets of Cleveland during the Republican National Convention, when [Johnson and I had] been walking behind a cigarette-wielding Ohioan. As the smoker’s exhaust wafted in our faces, I remarked offhand that—with the advent of e-cigarettes—I thought there was a good libertarian case for banning regular cigarettes. “I do too,” replied the health-obsessed triathlete, recounting his support for anti-smoking efforts in New Mexico.

I have mixed feelings about his stand because I am convinced habitual cigarette smoking is very injurious. My mother and father died at 60 and 67, respectively, and both were cigarette smokers since their teens. On the other hand, I favor the right to individual choice, free from government dictates.

Barr 2008 was more libertarian than Johnson/Weld 2016.

Where do you draw the line between personal behaviors in which you are allowed to be free, and personal behaviors subject to prohibition?

You let each state decide, per the Tenth Amendment.

Or is that too simple?

Dear glad,

re: “Mexican is the N-word...another fine bit of logic, and Trumps views on immigration are RACIST. This gy is a buffoon.”

Once again, you have to check where these ‘titles’ come from.
First, the title Mexican is a national title, therefore does not denote a ‘race’.

There are only THREE GROUPS of humanoids: Caucasian, Mongoloid, and Negroid. Mexican does not fit.

Trump’s view on ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, according to U.S. law, is quite fitting, within chapter and verse, and encompasses ALL PEOPLES OF ALL NATIONS, as it should.

As i remember, as growing up in California, the correct ‘term’ is wetback, not Negro.

Since you said that Trump is a buffoon. i will leave you with this. Hillary has stated, on record, that churches are temples of sedition. Not very fitting for an American president, doncha thunk?

Barr 2008 was more libertarian than Johnson/Weld 2016.

Probably, but as a former DA he was a statist control freak much more so than most libertarians.

Sorry, I was speaking of Gary Johnson. Now that I read what I wrote, I see only two or three connections were clicking in me brain...

Johnson has one purpose and that is to take votes away from Trump so that Clinton will be the next president.

Wanting to ban smoking? that is not a libertarian, that is a communist.

Ban cigs? Not a libertarian position, but I wish they would have been banned before they destroyed my heart, lungs, and ascending aorta. My own damned fault, not the governments.

Right, that worked so well with Prohibition.

And all drinkers aren’t addicted the way all smokers are.
