Our ways are not His Ways and love, itself, can be confusing.

People often say that love is the opposite of hate, but that’s not quite accurate.

To me, love is an action, something we do, and we often love without regard to or in opposition to our feelings.

In other words, you can love someone even though you feel nothing for them or even as you actively hate them with a white-hot passion.

In this regard, apathy would more accurately be the opposite to love, as apathy offers nothing, no feeling, no action.

Hate can be an action, but it is also descriptive as a feeling, as one end or polar reference point along a linear scale of emotion.

In human terms, it can be difficult to understand how the Father could hate while also loving, because a) love as an action regardless of feeling is difficult to do and b) the love/hate emotional dynamic itself is confusing.

As humans, we often end up hating forever the ones we confess to God and before family and friends we will love forever.

Otoh, choosing to love regardless of feelings can radically alter those feelings for the better.

I absolutely agree that the opposite of love is indifference.

In hate, there’s an element of caring somehow.

I think the problem we’ve encountered in this culture is to define emotions by feeling and not actions or state of mind.

So when we think of *hate* it’s the destructive, irrational, emotional reaction that we humans are prone to when wronged.

Then we project that onto God and think that He’s like us in that regard and it’s nothing like that at all.
