German Bishops: Pope Francis Is Fine With Protestant Communion

The press speaker of the German bishops writing on dbk.de (April 19) has denied that the Vatican rejected the decision of the German bishops to give communion to Protestants.

According to him reports which say the opposite, are “false”.

The denial confirms that Munich Cardinal Reinhard Marx will be meeting Pope Francis to discuss the matter.

The outcome of the meeting is predictable: Francis will create confusion allowing all parties to claim that he is on their side while accepting Protestant Communion.

Protestant Communion has been imposed in the "Catholic" Church in Germany for decades. A Catholic priest who would refuse to do this, would not be able to retain his position.

Why would Protestants want Catholic Communion? Boring sermon over at the Lutheran church?

Why would Protestants want Catholic Communion?

Wrong question.

Why would they NOT?

So, the Krauts are pioneering the concept of ‘Catholic by marriage’ (no pesky conversion process necessary!). The cynical side of me says that this is all about expanding the base for Deutschland’s notorious church tax. “Act now! Automatic membership for spouses!” And maybe, just maybe non-Catholic spouse starts showing up with family on Easter or Christmas and, more importantly, ticking the Katholische box on his/her tax return.

Fake news. The Pope, in fact, rejected the German Bishop’s plan

Wrong question. Why would they NOT?

Because it clashes with their way of practicing religion? (Though I do get your meaning.)

Why did the pope want his alleged disapproval to remain a secret?

It's because he likes to "make a mess". It's the M.O. of the stealth heretic.

I attended a Catholic funeral recently. It was extremely awkward when the Catholics lined up to take communion and the Protestants in attendance were excluded. Seemed strange to me.

A person who does not profess a Catholic belief, should not receive a Catholic sacrament. That would be mere play-acting, and disrespectful, wouldn’t it?

Half my family is Catholic, the other Missouri Lutheran.

So at weddings, baptisms, and funerals have the family will stay in the pews during communion.

Not awkward. We both have closed communion, but some people at the congregations looks at us funny.

I believe it's wrong for any Christian to be ostracized by a Christian church who denies them communion. Yes, ostracized is the right word. Wouldn't it be more in the Spirit of Christian love & unity to simply tell the congregation that "By receiving communion we believe that you are receiving the body and blood of Christ." Then let those in the pews decide whether they wish to receive.

Afraid that a non-Catholic will will offend Christ by taking "Catholic" communion? Really ??

When I think of Roman Catholicism, I think: power, control, rule driven, mixture of law and grace, strange doctrine, usurping Christ's role. Now to be fair, some of these elements exist in most churches but frankly, the RC church has more of these elements than any other church that I know of.

How can he be “fine” with it?

I know Protestants who aren’t fine with it because
they don’t believe in the Real Presence (and are
very honest about that fact).

Regarding closed communion, it has been practiced by Protestants for several hundred years. And it was that practice of “ostraziation” that you used, that resulted in The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) grew out of two movements seeking Christian unity that sprang up almost simultaneously in western Pennsylvania and Kentucky – movements that were backlashes against the rigid denominationalism of the early 1800s.

Presbyterian ministers Barton W. Stone in Kentucky and Thomas Campbell and Alexander Campbell in Pennsylvania and West Virginia were the leaders of this movement that was part of the Restoration Movement of the Great Awakening between 1790 and 1820. The 3 ministers believed that communion was given to us by Jesus and it was not for a denomination to refuse communion to any professing Christian.

Thanks for the ping and and the link and your explanation of open communion by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). I agree that is the way it ought to be.
