The Verse that Says It All

A fascinating Midrash credits an isolated verse in this week's Torah portion, Pinchas, with encapsulating the quintessence of Judaism[1].

The Midrash quotes four opinions as to which biblical verse best sums up the ultimate message of Torah. One sage, by the name of Ben Azzai, believed it was the verse in Genesis[2]: "This is the book of the chronicles of man; on the day that G-d created man He created him in the image of G-d."

Another sage, by the name of Ben Zoma, holds a different verse to be more central to Jewish thought: "Hear O Israel, the Lord is our G-d, the Lord is One[3].".....

“You pore over the Scriptures because you presume that by them you possess eternal life. These are the very words that testify about Me, yet you refuse to come to Me to have life...

Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, in whom you have put your hope. If you had believed Moses, you would believe Me, because he wrote about Me. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?” -Jesus Christ, John 5:39-47

The entire Scriptures are about Jesus Christ. I love the “Old Testament” but as the above indicates someone greater than Moses HAS COME. He chose Paul to preach what I gave you from Galatians. That’s from Him, it’s not my concoction.

If you really do believe the OT it will lead you to Jesus Christ.

“I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud, and that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and THAT ROCK WAS CHRIST.”—1 Cor. 10:1-5

That is yet another update from Christ through Paul. There are more...

It’s interesting that Jesus taught not a Christian, but an exclusively Hebrew prayer in the “Our Father”.

Every horror of the Talmud you have ever heard about, without exception, is a distortion of the pure intent. Without exception

There are goy who would differ with the Jews attempt at sterilizing their hatred of Jesus and Christians. "You'll know them by their fruits - Jesus". The Pharisees of Jesus day were responsible for Jesus' death. Please, I don't what to hear any Jewish BS contending otherwise. Today's rabbis and Talmud authors are modern day Pharisees.

Ever find it odd that the Torah testifies to every Jew receiving G-d’s word at Mt Sinai, and that such an event will never happen again, and that the covenant is eternal, yet when you make a claim, it’s from one man’s vision (long after the death of another man) and insist that that has the force to abrogate the mass-revelation in Exodus?

I mean, ya could pretty make up anything at that point.

“Ever find it odd that...”

No. God kept secrets from Moses that He did tell to Paul. His timing, His choosing. They all jibe with God’s promise to Abraham—“In you shall all the nations be blessed”—and find their ultimate fulfillment here:

“Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. BUT NOW in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For HE HIMSELF is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself ONE NEW MAN in place of the two, so making peace, and might RECONCILE US BOTH to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.”—Ephesians 2

God did not reveal this to Moses, and Paul would have been STONED if he had preached this in Moses’ day. Remember, God “knows the end from the beginning” and, being outside space-time, He spoke of the coming of His Son and only revealed Him “in the fullness of time”.

The same with this “mystery”, the fulfillment of His promise to Abraham. His secret, His timing.

There is a cost for following Christ. It is our life.

Taken from http://titusinstitute.com/applyingot/jesusot.php

What are the Old Testament references to Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God?

There are basically two kinds of OT references to the Son of God, the Messiah.

They are the messianic prophecies and pre-incarnate appearances.

I. His Messianic Prophecies in the OT

A. OT prophecies of the messiah’s true identity

1. The messiah was called by the titles of God, Jehovah and Elohim, in the OT.

a. Jehovah

1) Jehovah says to Zechariah that in the future the Jews “will look upon me whom they have pierced.”

Zechariah 12:1-l0 In v.10 Jehovah says that they will “look upon me whom they have pierced and mourn for him as one mourns for an only son.”

This agrees with Ps.22:16 where David predicts that the messiah would be pierced when he says, “they pierced my hands and my feet.”

In Rev.1:7 John writes of Jesus, the messiah, when he says, “Behold, he comes in the clouds; and every eye shall see him, and those also who pierced him and all the tribes of the earth shall mourn because of him.”

2) Jeremiah 23:5-6 predicts that the messiah will be described by the divine name of Jehovah.

Jeremiah 23:5-6

b. Elohim

1) In Isa.9:6-7, Isaiah predicted that the messiah would be “mighty God.”

2) In Isaiah 40:3, Isaiah predicted that the messiah would be coming would be the Lord God preceded by a herald.

3) In Isaiah 7:14, it is prophesied that the messiah would be “Immanuel,” God with us.

The apostle Matthew by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit quotes this OT prophecy in Matt. 1:20-24.

4) In Ps.45:6-7, David’s declaration of the divinity of the messiah, the coming king, points to the divinity of the messiah.

This verse is quoted in Hebrews 1 in reference to Jesus Christ.

c. Jesus accepts the OT titles of Jehovah and Elohim in the NT.

1) In several psalms, David addresses the Lord as his Lord and God. He personally worships God as deity.

Ps.7:1 Ps.13:3 Ps.30:1

This personal declaration by David to his Lord and God is the same one used by the apostle Thomas to Jesus Christ.

Jn.20:26-29, Thomas calls Jesus, “My Lord and my God.”

d. Indirect references to Jesus as Jehovah and Elohim of the OT

1) There are NT passages where the author applies OT passages that are clearly referring Jehovah or Elohim to Jesus Christ.

In Heb.1:10-12 the author applies an OT passage, which teaches that God created the earth and universe to Jesus Christ. This is a quote from Ps.102:25-27 where the psalmist speaks of God’s creation of the earth and universe.

2) In Eph.4:7-10, Paul applies to Jesus Christ an OT statement by David, which was addressed to God.

Paul quotes Ps. 68:18.

3) In John 12:41 John claims that Isaiah the prophet saw Jesus in his glory as the Lord God.

In Jn.12:41, John explains why many Jews saw Jesus’ miracles, but still rejected him. He says that it was because of God’s judgment which God himself had predicted would happen.

This was prophesied by Isaiah the prophet in Isa.6:9-10.

2. The messiah was prophesied to be both David’s physical descendent and David’s spiritual Lord in the OT.

It was predicted in the OT that the messiah would be the “Son of David,” that is, a physical descendent of David who would “reign on David’s throne.”

See 2 Sam. 7:12-13, Ps. 89:3- 4, Isa.9:6-7

The Jewish leaders believed and taught this. See John 7:42

Jesus fulfilled this prophecy as he was the physical descendent of David through his mother Mary (Lu.1:27, 32) and the legal descendent of David through Joseph (Matt.1:1, 17, Lu.2:4).

Jesus accepted the title of “Son of David” which means that he accepted the people’s recognition of him being the messiah. See Matt.9:27-31; 20:29-34; 21:14-16

In Matt.22:41-46, Jesus taught that messiah was predicted not only to be a human being descended from David, but also an eternal divine being who was superior to David. Jesus quotes Ps.110:1.

3. The messiah was prophesied to be the Son of God in the OT.

a. In Heb.1:4-5, the writer applies two OT texts to Jesus that speak of the messiah’s true identity as the Son of God.

The first statement comes from Ps.2:7-12.

The second quote is from 2 Sam.7:13-14 and/or 1 Chron.17:12-13.

b. In Jn.1:49, Nathanael recognizes the supernatural knowledge that Jesus possesses and immediately calls him the “Son of God.”

c. At his trial before the leaders of Israel, the high priest asks Jesus plainly if he is claiming to be “the Son of God.” Jesus said “yes.”

Matt.26:63-64

In Jn.20:30, John explains that he wrote his gospel to show Jesus is the Son of God.

4. The messiah was prophesied to be the Son of Man, the king, who will come to earth in power and glory and rule over it.

a. In the book of Daniel, God gave to Daniel a revelation of the messiah and Daniel referred to him as “son of man.”

Dan.7:13-14

b. Jesus took upon himself this messianic title, “Son of Man” and referred to his fulfillment of this vision of messiah.

Mark13:24-27

Matt. 26:63-64

5. The messiah was prophesied to be the cornerstone and foundation of Israel.

Isaiah 28:16

Paul referred to this prophesy of Jesus in two passages.

Rom. 9:31-33 Eph. 2:20

Ps.118:22

Acts 4:11

I Peter 2:6-8

B. OT prophecies of the messiah’s birth, ministry, death, resurrection, and eternal glory

1. The messiah’s birth

a. The messiah would be born in Bethlehem.

Micah 5:2

Mat.2:3-6

b. The messiah would be born from a virgin

Matt.1:18-25

Isa:7:14

2. The messiah’s ministry

a. The messiah would begin his ministry in Galilee

Mat.4:12-17

Isa.9:1-2.

b. The messiah would have a ministry of preaching and miracles.

Matthew 9:35

Isa.61:1-2

Lu.4:16-21

2) Jesus also applied another passage from Isaiah to himself, which predicts his healing ministry as he answers the question of the disciples of John the Baptist.

Mat.11:1-6.

Isa.35:3-6.

3. The messiah’s suffering and death

a. Isaiah 53

b. Ps.22

Matt.27:46

4. The messiah’s resurrection

a. The messiah would die and rise again from the dead.

Acts 2:22-32

Peter quotes Ps.16:8-11.

In Acts 13:34-37, Paul also appeals to this psalm as a prediction that Jesus, the messiah, would be resurrected from the dead.

II. His pre-incarnate appearances in the OT

A. The Son of God was called the Angel or Messenger of the Lord when he appeared in the OT.

In the Old Testament, a being appears who is called the “Messenger of the Lord” or the “Messenger of God” and is also called “Lord” and “God.”

He is described as separate from the Lord (Jehovah) and yet is called Lord (Jehovah). He is described as separate from God (Elohim) and yet is called God (Elohim). This perfectly coincides with the how the Son of God is described in the New Testament.

The Hebrew word translated “angel” also means “messenger” (one who brings a message from another).

Although it is often translated as “Angel of the Lord.” However, he is clearly not an angelic spirit being as can be seen from context of the various passages where he appears.

The appearances of the Son of God as the “Messenger of the Lord” in the OT are given below in chronological order.

1. The Messenger of the Lord, the Son of God, appears to Hagar in Gen.16:7-14

2. The Messenger of the Lord appears to Abraham when he was about to sacrifice Isaac Gen.22:9-19

3. The Messenger of God speaks to Jacob in a dream and calls himself God in Gen.31:11-13.

4. The Messenger of the Lord appears to Moses in the burning bush in Exod.3:1-6.

5. The Angel of the Lord appears to Gideon in Jud.6:11-22.

6. Other passages where the Son of God appears as the Angel or Messenger of Jehovah are

Gen. 48:15-16 Exodus 13:21 and Exodus 14:19 Judges 2:1-5 Jud.13:1-22

::Sigh:: Once again, "proofs" of chrstianity that assume from the outset that the claims of chrstianity and the "new testament" are true.

Can chrstianity be proven without quoting the "NT" or simply repeating chrstian claims as if they were self-evidently true? No it cannot.

avenir, everything that you say in Post #21 is part of a self-serving argument - made either by my distant cousin, the carpenter (or those who followed him and created a new religion), or by yourself. I simply do not - CAN not - believe that the person you revere as the Messiah is, in fact, the actual Messiah as foretold in the Hebrew Scriptures. Why? Because, very simply, believing Jews cannot accept the Christian Bible (the so-called “New Testament”) as being valid or true.

Again, WHY? Well, for one thing, there are numerous contradictions and inconsistencies between the Jewish Bible and the Christian Bible (which bases its very validity on the Jewish Bible - so guess which way logic would dictate that any contradictions get resolved?). Read and learn: https://jewsforjudaism.org/knowledge/articles/why-jews-cannot-accept-the-new-testament/

Further, as to your claims that the “Old Testament” foretells the coming of Jesus, here is an explanation as to why Jews DON’T see Jesus anywhere in their own scriptures: https://jewsforjudaism.org/knowledge/articles/why-dont-jews-see-jesus-in-the-scriptures/

Finally, as to why Jews do not (and never will) accept that Jesus is the Messiah foretold in our scriptures: https://jewsforjudaism.org/knowledge/articles/messiah-the-criteria/

I offer these explanations (incomplete as the authors admit that they are - meaning that there is MORE proof than they’re citing) ONLY for the purpose of showing you that things are not quite as theologically cut-and-dry as you think they are, that there are MANY reasons why Jews do not and CAN not accept your theology. However, as I mentioned in an earlier post, I (as a Jew) still view you as having a place in the World to Come (i.e. Heaven), so long as you abide by the 7 Noahide Laws. Though I disagree with you on fundamental matters of theology, I wish you well - but please study and learn more, it will help your soul.

Georgiegirl,

With all due respect, your interpretation (i.e. the Christian interpretation) of Isaiah 53 (the suffering servant prophecy) is the result of BOTH taking it out of context AND mistranslations:

JesusIsLord, you said: “The Hebrew word translated “angel” also means “messenger” (one who brings a message from another).”

Oh, you want to go there, eh? Well, you might not like what you find when you do that.

If you are open-minded enough, take a look at the opening paragraphs of https://jewsforjudaism.org/knowledge/articles/why-jews-cannot-accept-the-new-testament/ Don’t worry, you don’t have to go to the trouble of actually clicking on that link - I quote the relevant passages below (note that I have eliminated the Hebrew text from the quote below, ONLY because it causes everything in this post into a single, unreadable, paragraph - but I invite you to visit the site itself to see that I haven’t changed the English text in any way):

“Additionally, Judaism encourages full disclosure and an honest examination of the Bible. Therefore, when passages within Jewish Scriptures appear to contradict one another, our sages never ignored them. Instead, they always sought an understanding consistent with the entire Torah.

I begin by presenting one of many examples that substantiate the Jewish approach. In 1 Chronicles 21:1, it states, “Then Satan stood up against Israel and moved David to number Israel.”

However, another passage in the Jewish Bible, 2 Samuel 24:1, states that God caused King David to count the Jewish people. “The anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He incited David against them to say, ‘Go number Israel…’”

So, who made David number Israel – Satan or God? The confusion is based on a misunderstanding of the word, “Satan.”

Unlike Christianity, Jewish Scriptures do not teach that Satan is a “fallen and rebellious angel.” In fact, the first time that Satan appears in the Jewish Bible, the word refers to an angel sent by God to prevent Balaam, the non-Jewish prophet, from cursing the Jewish people. In fact, Balaam winds up blessing them. Definitely not a mission for an evil Satan!

The Jewish Bible states, “God was very angry when he (Balaam) went, and the angel of the Lord stood in the road to oppose him…” [Numbers 22:22] In this verse, the Hebrew word for “oppose” is “l’satan” and it is clearly not referring to an angel who is rebelling against God’s will. Rather, it refers to a messenger designated to carry out His will. The literal meaning of the Hebrew word “malach” is “messenger” although it is usually translated as “angel.”

This interpretation is also consistent with the biblical account of Satan found in the book of Job. There we see that Satan has no free will of his own and is given permission by God to torment Job to test his loyalty to Him.

Thus, we see that Satan is a force, an angel, used by God to test mankind. Furthermore, we can understand the purpose of evil in this world and why the Jewish prophet Isaiah 45:7 states that God, “makes peace and creates evil” Contrary to Christianity’s viewpoint, which is similar to the one inherent in Greek mythology, Judaism does not regard Satan as a separate force that exists to oppose God.

These explanations, combined with a careful scrutiny of the original Hebrew, clarify the apparent contradiction in the passages cited above from Chronicles and Samuel – and they also demonstrate that there is no contradiction at all because Satan is an emissary sent by God who created him solely for His use in testing mankind.”

So, just taking one of your statements at face value, it can be seen that your knowledge of theology is quite limited (as is mine, btw). You lack a fundamental understanding of the very basis upon which all of Christianity is based (i.e. Judaism and the Jewish Bible, which you call the “Old Testament”). One of the real basic parts of your theology is that Satan is a rebellious angel, opposed to God...whereas Jewish theology was, is and always will be that NO angel can EVER rebel - they are creations and servants of God, always. How, logically speaking, could the Creator of the Universe be opposed by any being which He created?

Thank you Ancest for your thoughtful discussion. I posted a very long list of over 300 Messianic prophesies fulfilled by Y’shua, sorry it is a long list and will take some time to study. I do appreciate this very critical discussion.

Thanks for posting this. This parsha was the first I studied and thought it was a warning against zealotry. It’s refreshing to read different opinions.

Can Christianity be proven without quoting the "NT"

Atheists and Christ-haters insist that the ministry of Jesus and the Apostles where ahistorical because from their perspective, they have to be. Any other answer threatens their fundamental world view.

Insistence on the existence of original manuscripts misses the point. Christianity came out of Judaism, which was an "oral tradition". The Torah is a computation of oral tradition that predates the actual events or any written record by many thousands of years. The letters of Paul to churches he established were written by him and disbursed in his time (late 1 AD). What we have today are copies of Paul's original copies. The same is true for every book of the NT. I.e., we have copies of copies of the originals OR copies of the oral tradition. This is not much different to how we view the Torah. We believe that oral tradition and/or copies of copies have been preserved.

The first converts to Christianity were Jews, who of course, were acclimated to an oral tradition. Why did they take to writing letters?

The Roman Empire was huge, but it had excellent transportation links. This led to a very far flung network of congregations and a serious problem for centralized administration. They solved the problem with new technologies--text, copied and carried throughout the empire.

Ironically, the Christian proficiency with literacy created a remarkable opportunity for them as administrators in the Roman Empire. From a persecuted Jewish sect, Christians became the IT guys for the political class.

Considering that Christians imbued the words of these Epistles with divine importance, it is reasonable to assume that they were carefully copied. That assumption is backed up by copies of the didache, which although not considered canonical by later Christian councils, was nevertheless broadly distributed and translated. The copies we have found, dating back to the first century, agree very closely.

I want to assure and comfort you that there are seven over-arching commandments in the ....“Old” Testament, and that they grant you, yes you, your true connection to G-d Almighty.

Like any religion, Judaism is a religion which cannot give life. Life can only be found in, through and withing the life of Yeshua the Moshiach. I am a born-again, Spirit-filled Christian. Christ (Moshiach) lives in me.

My prayer for you is that you read the gospel of John; that your heart and eyes be opened and that you receive Yeshua the Moshiach. Your religion cannot save you.

I heard a story of how they catch monkeys in certain parts of the world. Hunters fashion a heavy wooden bottle with a narrow neck. They place nuts in it and locate the bottle near a pack of monkeys. A monkey will put his hand in the bottle and grab a handful of nuts but becomes unable to extract his clenched fist through the narrow neck of the bottle. Hunters will then walk up to the monkey and catch it because it is unwilling to let go of the nuts.

The point of this story is that there are some things in life, which if we don't let go, will cost us our life. Decades ago, I began a search for truth and life. I tried philosophy; I tried hedonism; I tried TM; I tried religion. In time, the Lord brought me to Himself and through His mercy, I found Yeshua the Moshiach and was filled with the Holy Spirit. Life is good! God is good!

Okay, I've said this so many times and it's never done any good, but here we go again.

Suppose Phinneous were to read the gospel of John. Okay. Why should he believe it? Why should he think it is Divinely inspired, or from G-d, or tells the truth?

Can you just please explain this? How do you know the "new testament" is what it claims to be? You can quote it until you're blue in the face, but is there any reason to believe it? Is it just "self-evidently" true?

Sheesh, I've read the "book of mormon," but I never believed it.
