The saddest thing was that it was just an all out slaughter. Years ago, someone here posted about “Lutheran” troops seizing Rome. I was confused, as there were no Protestant armies that far south.
Well, I was wrong in part. There were Protestant armies. Under the banner of the Catholic Emperor Charles V.
It became a war between the French and the Pope, fought in Germany. Even the “Lutheran” king Gustav killed more Protestants than Catholics (one of the reason my family has HATED the Swedes for a long time).
The Thirty years War was not as straight forward as many suppose. It was a tangled up mess, with Catholic money paying Protestant armies to fight Catholic states, and visa versa. By the end, most of central Europe was a smoking wreck.
In researching my family tree, I was shocked that the records stop for the period. Baptismal records, ordination records, marriage records, all gone. Not even WWII was that bad.
