‘We Lost Everything’: Christian Baker’s Emotional Appeal After Govt Forces Her to Pay $135,000...

An Oregon couple who were forced to pay $135,000 after declining to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple had their first appearance before the Oregon Court of Appeals on Thursday, as they continue to fight back against the massive judgement.

Aaron and Melissa Klein, owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, are arguing that the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries — the state agency responsible for discrimination claims — violated their religious liberty, due process and free speech, after forcing the bakers to pay $135,000 to the lesbian couple at the center of the dispute.

The Klein v. Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries case was argued before a three-judge panel on Thursday, with conservative legal firm First Liberty Institute — which is representing the Kleins — arguing that the government “should never force someone to violate their conscience or their beliefs,” according to a press release.

What? You don’t like my cake? You are a saltophobe! Sorry, if you don’t like my cake, maybe you would have tasted it before you hired me.

A clear violation of the 1st Amendments freedom to peacefully assemble. The right to assemble includes for the purpose of business. The right is also extended in the negative. Just as you have the right TO participate with a organization, you can NOT be forced to participate against your will.

Civil rights legislation is powerful. Instead of the potential cost of a wedding cake, it lets them pillory people to make an example of them, to bankrupt them if they dare disagree with any protected group.
That’s why homosexuals, transgenders, Muslims via the MENA racial group, all want the coveted Civil Rights designation.

If it was my bakery, I would make the cake tor them and hand them two brides and two grooms for the cake. Let them put them on the cake.

Actually, I would have just baked the cake.

What’s next? I won’t be able to take a six pack to a certain check out line because it is alcohol is against domeone’s religion. This couplre is trying to impose their religious beliefs on others and now they have cost themselves $135,000. Stupid.

The ONLY good thing to come out of this is that the bureaucrat who forced the fine on the Kleins ran for Oregon secretary of state. ..and lost to a rather conservative GOP candidate...Dennis Richardson.

Thanks for this valuable information. I will recommend Samaritan’s Purse after this.

I wasn’t aware that the “Go fund me” people had turned to discrimination.

Even if it is overturned at SCOTUS, what happens in the mean time to the Bakery, their livelihood and everything in their lives being effected by this really bad ruling. When it is overturned the gay couple should be forced to pay twice what the Kliens paid and all legal expenses etc since they only did this to the kliens to make a statement and for greed.

At least that piece of scum Brad Avakian lost.

He tried to run a campaign for Secretary of State by talking about how pro-homosexual and abortion he is. Not even kidding.

So what? You simply shop elsewhere, meanwhile the guy who owns his business gets to run his business freely without the government forcing him to run it the government's way. That's called "freedom."

This couplre is trying to impose their religious beliefs on others and now they have cost themselves $135,000. Stupid.

Nonsense. They didn't impose themselves on anyone, the "customer" did, by darkening their door, and when being informed that they would not meet the customer's expectations, the customer chose to impose his religious views on them and took them to court. It just so happens that the customer's god is the customer's self interest.

In order for the bakers to "impose their religious beliefs on others" they would have to chase down people, force them to enter their store, hogtie them so they can't leave, and force them to admit Jesus is their savior while threatening them with a plate full of hot cross buns.

You are welcome.
Go Fund Me went south about two years ago. Originally they did allow funding for Melissa, Baronelle (I believe a florist from Oregon), and that Christian Pizza place (I believe in Ohio) - and we sent them some donations - but the Sodomites complained, and Go Fund Me shut down any donations to Christians who were being persecuted for refusing to celebrate the Sodomite lifestyle. No refusal of service, but refusal to participate in Wedding celebrations or something similar (I don't believe the Pizza event was a Wedding - but some kind of setup that the Sodomite activists were trying to force the Pizza place to publicly support their lifestyle).
Fortunately Samaritan's Purse stepped in to help.

As a postscript, I believe the Pizza place wasn't getting sued - just 'shunned' - and the net effect is that their business boomed afterwards. So they actually made out OK. Melissa, and Barlonelle, unfortunately have had their businesses ruined, and lives attacked, by the pro-Sodomite government gestapo in Washington and Oregon.

It was a radical liberal pro-homosexual activist who was judge, jury, and executioner. There was no due process and the appeal was to the bureaucrat who made the judgement in the first place.

No. What's stupid is thinking that the government should be in the business of deciding how you and I should be able to run our own lives.

There are countries, and forums, better suited for thinking like yours.

Have you tried DU lately. They'd clearly be much more to your liking.

‘We Lost Everything’

No you didn’t. You have your dignity and your morals and your place in Heaven most likely. Why on Earth do supposed Christians lie like that? It is tragic to see that they don’t trust in God.

It can’t be since it is not federal.

No...you are not thinking...it’s kinda like employers/companies saying you are not as a CC owner able to bring your gun inside their business. They can say that and suffer the consequences. Here the GOVT is mandating something...not the biz,

$135,000 ?!!

the average American makes about $40k/yr.

this penalty, for lack of participation, is the equivalent of 3 YEARS OF FORCED LABOR (prison)

how the hell is this kind of crap even close to right??
