PCA church in suburban Birminham with 4-5000 members wants to establish its own police department with full arrest and investigation powers, and it looks like they are getting it pushed through the state legislature.

Megachurch ping? There aren’t many congregations around with their own police departments, but if the Vatican can have their Swiss guards, I guess the Presbyterians need to have an offsetting force.

What is going on in or around this church that requires a police force? The link seems sketchy on details.

It was a pretty nice area when they moved there in the 1980s, as I recall. There has to be something missing from that story.

Multiple jurisdictions, two municipalities and unincorporated county. The affiliated high school is in the neighboring county.

Nothing sketchy, believe me. Solid church.

The biggest issue is that they want to keep the drug busts at their school off the record and under the radar.

I realized that I didn’t make much sense. All those jurisdictions meet on the very large campus.

This church is where the PCA began. Very conservative.

No, what you said at first made sense to me, mostly because we have some similar issues in Northern Alabama. I just had not seen a church involved like this before.

Not to be rude, but that’s quite an accusation. Do you have anything to back that up?

The worst part was that when they knew the drug thing was going on, they did not report it to law enforcement but decided to “investigate” it themselves.

The police later became involved.

Thanks for filling in the missing link. Although it sounds like local law enforcement was pretty ‘tame’.

In the Dallas, they call the area where folks are above the law ‘The Bubble’, and the two enclave communities have their own police departments to make sure the kids get home safe and the parents don’t have to pick them up at the Dallas jail in the middle of the night. Sounds like Briarwood wants to go a step up from that.

I did mention Birminham (Birmingham) in my first post. The Religion Forum doesn’t let you put states in the ‘Topics’, but I see someone was nice enough to add it to the Keywords.

The wealthiest of the wealthiest in Bham, (who don’t attend Mountain Brook High School or John Carroll) all go to Briarwood.

Not as much money as Dallas, but they carry a big stick in their neighborhood.
