They bear special responsibility by accepting election to the Throne of Peter. The papacy is no guarantee of salvation. There are, undoubtedly, popes in hell and Satan must take special delight in tormenting them. Presbyterian C. S. Lewis gave us very good insights in The Screwtape Letters and in Screwtape Proposes a Toast. To capture the soul of a pope must bring to his tempter special honors in hell.
