Trump booed at Catholic fundraising dinner
Catholic Herald ^ | October 21, 2016

Donald Trump was booed by diners during a Catholic fundraising event last night.

The Alfred E Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, an annual white-tie gala in New York, is often the last time the two presidential nominees share a stage before Election Day and is traditionally a time when campaign hostilities are set aside. The event raises money for impoverished children throughout New York

The speakers usually poke fun at themselves and each other. But the audience seemed to think Trump had crossed a line with his caustic language about Clinton.

Trump referred to his opponent as “corrupt” during a lengthy riff on the FBI’s investigation into her use of a private email server as secretary of state.

“Hillary is so corrupt she got kicked off the Watergate Commission. How corrupt do you have to be to get kicked off the Watergate Commission? Pretty corrupt,” he said to loud boos and at least one call demanding he get off the stage.

Trump went on, to growing jeers: “Hillary believes that it’s vital to deceive the people by having one public policy and a totally different policy in private. Here she is tonight, in public, pretending not to hate Catholics.”

It comes after the controversy over the “Catholic Spring” emails, in which Wikileaks revealed that Clinton’s campaign chief, John Podesta, claimed to have helped “create” organisations in order to start a “revolution” within the Church.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan said yesterday that comments made about Catholics in these and other Wikileaks emails were “insulting and patronising.” He told ABC: “If it had been said about the Jewish community, if it had been said about the Islamic community, within 10 minutes there would have been an apology and a complete distancing from those remarks.” Cardinal Dolan said that he hoped Clinton would disassociate herself from the remarks.

At last night’s dinner, Trump and Clinton sat on either side of Cardinal  Dolan. When they entered and took their seats, they did not greet each other or make eye contact, though they did shake hands at the conclusion of the roast.

Dolan later called his seat “the iciest place on the planet.”

Most eyes were on Trump, who famously glowered through President Barack Obama’s jokes at his expense during the 2011 White House Correspondents Dinner.

The speeches largely exhibited the gently mocking humour which is traditional at the event. Trump’s biggest laughs came as he talked about claims Melania Trump had copied parts of a speech from Michelle Obama. “They think [Michelle Obama’s] absolutely great. My wife Melania gives the exact same speech, and people get on her case,” he said to whoops and laughs.

Clinton was the first one to laugh when Trump joked that she had bumped into him earlier in the night “and she very civilly said ‘Pardon me'” — a reference to the Republican nominee’s frequent declarations that his opponent should go to jail.

Clinton, meanwhile, joked that she had taken a break from her “usual nap schedule” to attend and suggested that the audience should be pleased she’s not charging her usual fee for speaking in front of potential donors.

But she also got in some digs at Trump, a few of which drew scattered jeers. Clinton said she understood why Trump disliked teleprompters, because they can be difficult to follow and “I’m sure it’s even harder when you’re translating from the original Russian.”

She also joked about Trump’s attitude to women. Most Americans see the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of freedom, Clinton said; but “Donald looks at the Statue of Liberty and sees a ‘4’. Maybe a ‘5’ if she loses the torch and tablet and changes her hair.”

The dinner is named after the former New York governor Al Smith, a Democrat who in 1928 became the first Catholic to receive a major party nomination for president.

Best election ever. This man fights and knows how to grab headlines. Nobody can discuss their outrage without discussing the content of his comments. Brilliant.

It's so easy to play fast and loose with [diabolical] stuff like this and be more concerned about your personal favorability over God while you're on this side of eternity. In the past 5 years I think I've heard only one homily on the seriousness of this life and dangers of eternal damnation (eternal solitary confinement; isolation and darkness for ever and ever).

they fell asleep and was made by a state coroner
appointed by Bill Clinton. Parents protested and after

of death then changed to murder, the boys having been
stabbed and skulls crushed before the train arrived.

Officials in the Administration who have died in the first four years :

Secretary of Commerce
Deputy White House Counsel
Chief of Naval Operations

Of these 89 deaths the causes break out as follows :

Deaths Cause Incidents
59 Plane Crashes 12

or accidently come across them, you will likely die in a plane crash, a murder or suicide.

Donald Trump treated this night no different than his rallies. But what is acceptable and entertaining at those events was not appropriate in last evening’s setting.

Did you see Hillary's speech? It was of the exact same tone yet you're not criticizing her.

Hillary states her agreement on Partial Birth Abortion on Wednesday night, and the Catholic audience are 80% in her corner.

Not a catholic audience. These are politicians, media elite and wealthy New Yorkers.

The Clinton body count is massive and growing. Hillary Clinton will stop at nothing to become President, and death seems to follow her everywhere she goes. It is time to learn the truth about these murders and expose the Clintons. Instead of the White House, it appears they both belong in prison.

It made me mad to see him get booed, but the hag got some too, including the Rudy Giuliani Death Stare and some comments met with the sound of crickets.

Here in Pittsburgh a whole lot of Catholics who attend Mass regularly nonetheless vote Democrat. Decades of union propaganda holds more sway with them than Catholic doctrine, unfortunately.

I still think in this case it's a cultural thing and not necessarily people who take their faith seriously. E.g., my guess is the members of the Knights of Columbus at these parishes would be supporting Trump almost exclusively. With the decline attendance priests are super-reluctant to rub anyone the wrong way or scare anyone off so they tone down the moral admonitions. Admittedly a tough problem for them. It'll be easier when we're back in the catacombs, which will come soon enough if Trump loses.

How many want to make a bet Francis would be one of the booers too if he were in attendance?

Personal opinion.... for a charity event that is organized by a church, they both probably went well over the line.

What unmitigated Nonsense, if this righteous crowed of “CATHOLICS” Booed Trump they should have disinvited Crooked Hillary, who has two Organizations working to Disrupt the Catholic Church.
“Faux Indignation” by these Delicatessen Catholics.

So, what are YOUR thoughts about this?

The liberal elite at this white-tie fundraiser was expecting the typical groveling GOPe nominee, on bended knee, to be a good sport about others poking fun at himself while only "respectfully" returning fire when it was his turn to take the podium.

It was expected that the Democrat nominee would get the better of the Republican, as that has always been the way. At least since Reagan.

Alas, it was not to be. Donald Trump is a wolf and wolves do not respect the sheep. As a result, the sheep got wide-eyed in fear.

Hillary referenced him.

I believe how we treat others is the highest expression of faith and of service. I’m not Catholic. I’m a Methodist, but one of the things that we share is the belief that in order to achieve salvation we need both faith and good works. And you certainly don’t need to be Catholic to be inspired by the humility and heart of the Holy Father, Pope Francis. Or to embrace his message.

(APPLAUSE)

His message about rejecting a mindset of hostility, his calls to reduce inequality, his warnings about climate change, his appeal that we build bridges, not walls. Now as you may know, my running mate, Tim, is Catholic and went to Jesuit schools, and one of the things he and I have talked about is this idea from the Jesuits of the Magis, the more, the better. But we need to get better at finding ways to disagree on matters of policy while agreeing on questions of decency and civility. How we talk to each other, treat each other, respect each other.

Catholics are in a large part of the reason why Democrats keep getting elected. It’s shocking really.

If you hate the degree and nature of corruption embodied by Hillary, it is awfully difficult to sugarcoat it and take light-hearted jabs at her. I say that what Trump showed last night was his honest, straight forward response given his understanding of the unfettered evil that Hillary is. THAT approach is what we need, and that I want, to clean up the cesspool in Washington.

It may look awkward in a high class social setting, but it trumpets the disgust and resolve Trump has to fix the mess. I suspect that some of the audible cringes were from those who are caught up in the evil and corruption. . . win and take them ALL down, Donald!!!!

do they have about 850 attendees?
It would be interesting to see how many people attend these things-
850 would be a nice number- a biblical number..

450 prophets of Baal
400 prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel’s table..
1 Elijah
one day Elijah may speak at this kind of event again before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord..
