Father God,
Our nations’s pilgrims came here across the ocean, escaping persecution in their own lands from people they thought were their own—fellow citizens, corrupted Christians. They braved the salty cold in handmade boats. Many died on the crossings. When they got here, many died of disease, attacks by animals or starvation. They hacked a nation out of wilderness, a nation dedicated to You and Your Son Jesus Christ, so that they might be free, free in Christ.
Now we “bitter clingers” are surrounded by persecutions from people we thought were our own—fellow citizens, corrupted Christians.
We confess, Lord, to the manias that shook our nation off its moorings for the past half century. Whether we participated in the destruction or stood and watched, our nation has been turned away from You. We, and our children, are caught up a constant flood of depictions of sin and temptations to degradation.
There is no remedy but You, Father.
There is no goodness, no righteousness, no purity, no correctness but in You.
There is no cleanliness, no knowledge, no decency but in You.
Father, we have sinned as a nation.
We deserve nothing.
But Your grace is more profound than our ignorance.
Your mercy is beyond imagining for those who believe.
Your power to restore all that has been lost is unfathomable.
Your Word is eternal, and eternally to be praised.
Lead us, Father, in this time of great peril and strife, to do Your Will,
to set the example, to speak Your wisdom and act in Your purposes.
Protect our leaders Trump and Pence, and all the members of their families, congregations and businesses,
as they struggle on our behalf.
Show us how to struggle with them to rebuild your shining City on a hill.
Pour down your blessings on all our enemies, that their hearts would miraculously turn to You, that they would fall on their knees in repentance and adoration, and know Your peace.
We ask a blessing, Lord, on Hillary Clinton, that her heart, mind and soul would know Your will with utter certainty, and that her long years of actions giving the appearance of transgression and falsehood would be realized, repented and would come to justice.
We ask a blessing on all those courageous persons behind the scenes who long to reveal truth, and are quaking in fear of professional or personal martyrdom. Bring them the peace that passes understanding, Father.
And we ask a blessing on our present government and every official in power over us, that Your Holy Spirit be of counsel to every one of them, an unmistakeable urging and controller of their words and actions from this day forward.
We ask these blessings although we do not deserve Your favor,
except that You gave us Your grace,
Your only begotten Son, sacrificed so that we might live,
And in His Name,
In Jesus’ Holy Name we pray,
Amen.
