To the Church in Smyrna

8 “To the angel of the church in Smyrna write:

These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again. 9 I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich! I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.

11 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

There is an apocryphal tale of a missionary coming to America from some either Asia or Africa, where Christians were suffering horrendous persecution. With innocence and sincerity, he told the hosting congregation that the persecuted parishioners in his native land were praying earnestly for the Church in America. The congregation was puzzled, and perhaps even a bit annoyed. "Why would YOU be praying for US?" they asked. "You are the ones being persecuted!" The missionary said that because of persecution, the Church in his country was growing, not only in numbers, but in faith and commitment. Meanwhile, the Church in "Free" countries was being compromised and diluted to the point where it was becoming ineffectual.

Like I said, it is an apocryphal tale, probably invented to stir a congregation out of its lethargy, but the Letter To The Church in Smyrna is to the "Persecuted Church" and it is full of encouragement and commendation. In fact, of all the Letters in Revelation 2-3, it is the only one that does not contain a rebuke.

Our own era is producing a brand new crop of Christian Martyrs and Saints. Twenty-one beheaded on a beach in Libya, an elderly priest in France, Hundreds of Christian Girls kidnapped and sold into slavery, and many more whose names we do not know are the modern-day Church of Smyrna. They are precious in God's sight.
