Avoid 'rigorism' on divorce and remarriage, Pope advises family conference [Catholic Caucus]

Pope Francis tore into priests who refuse to baptize the children of unwed mothers-- referring to them as "animals"-- during a June 16 meeting with participants in a Rome conference on the family.

It is "pastoral cruelty" to refuse baptism, the Pope told the group, which was gathered at the basilica of St. John Lateran.

In answer to a question about the message of his apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, the Pope said that the Church should avoid "rigorism" in responding to the pastoral needs of Catholics in irregular marital unions. "The Gospel chooses another way," he said: "welcoming, accompanying, integrating, discerning, without putting our noses in the moral life of other people."

The Pontiff said that the two sessions of the Synod on the Family were intended to help "putting a face to the issues," so that Church leaders would understand the danger of "turning faith into an ideology through nicely landscaped system which ignore grace."

Papa Tango: It is "pastoral cruelty" to refuse baptism, the Pope told the group, which was gathered at the basilica of St. John Lateran.

Can. 868 §1 For an infant to be baptised lawfully it is required:

2° that there be a well-founded hope that the child will be brought up in the catholic religion. If such hope is truly lacking, the baptism is, in accordance with the provisions of particular law, to be deferred and the parents advised of the reason for this.

“I am an unwed mother and believe this Pope is a jackass.”

The Pope knows exactly what he is doing. Half the population is divorced. 60% of kids are bastards. One of the presidential candidates has 3 divorces and another candidate is a lesbian “married” to a serial rapist. The Pope is but a representation of his time.

Um...

I am with the pope on this one.

Jesus reached out to prostitutes ect. No way in heck would Jesus have turned away a child because his mother was a sinner.

What does that have to do with the indissolubility of marriage?

The Pope is supposed to represent the Word of God, not “his time”. Religious relativism is why the Episcopalian and Methodist churches are dead and why the Catholic Church is ill.

I work with a guy who tells me that he is Jewish and Christian. He married a woman who was baptized Catholic but was not a practicing Catholic. They were married outside of the church (at a winery, outdoor wedding). They don’t go to any church. Shortly after their baby was born they wanted to have a Catholic baptism. All they really wanted was to have a party and bestow the title of “godfather” on one of their non-Catholic friends.

The Catholic priest told them that first of all he wanted to see a Catholic baptismal certificate from the godfather to be. After that the couple decided not to get a Catholic baptism. Good for that priest. There is no way that the baby would be raised Catholic. The parents only wanted a party.

Yes, as a Christian, no matter what, I would baptize an innocent child. But I’m not a Catholic anymore and Catholics don’t do this.

What would be the purpose/premise in refusing to baptize a child simply in regards the parents marital status?

There is no one Bergoglio hates more than priests—except Jesus Christ.

Nothing. The only correct reason not to baptize a baby is if the parent or parents have no intention of raising the child Catholic.

Baptism creates obligations. The Church has always held it wrong to baptize a child who is not going to be raised to fulfill the obligations created by baptism.

This has nothing to do with prostitutes.

An unwed mother who co-habitates with the child's father can not properly raise her child in the Catholic faith.

The Pope hates:

1) priests;
2) canon lawyers;
3) the Catholic Church;
4) Jesus Christ.
