The morning prayer from the Koran was read at Hagia Sophia in Istanbul on the first day of Muslim Ramadan, Monday, June 6, in the presence of Turkey’s general secretary of religious affairs.
The former Byzantine church that now serves as a museum, will turn into a mosque for the next 30 days and the Koran will be read daily until July 5, when Ramadan ends. Religious state channel TRT Diyanet will be broadcasting daily at 2:00 pm from Hagia Sophia.
The fact that the former Christian Orthodox Church that for the past 80 years has operated as a museum and now turns into a mosque for one month has touched a sensitive nerve with Christian Greeks and has been criticized broadly.
However, no official complaint was voiced from the Greek government. The lack of official reaction has prompted criticism from conservative opposition party New Democracy.

As I wrote the other day, by God’s grace, Constantinople will be liberated in my lifetime by Orthodox Russian troops and I’ll be at Agia Sophia to participate in the continuation of the Divine Liturgy cut off by the Mohammedan dog Suleiman and his rapist curs on Tuesday, May 29. 1453!

It stopped being a mosque in 1931. Ataturk (the best guy to happen to Turkey since Paul) turned it into a secular museum in 1935.
I took my five teenage kids to Istanbul this spring. As we looked at numerous buildings from Roman and Byzantine times that had been converted to Islamic or Ottoman uses I drilled home the most important lesson a Westerner can learn from visiting the once great and once Christian nation of Turkey. “Don’t lose wars.” It’s a lesson Western Europe really needs to learn from quickly.

You understand of course that it was Western Crusaders who so weakened the Empire that it fell to the Turks in the 15th century. You know, when the crusaders of the 7th Crusade took The City, they set up a whore on the altar at Argia Sophia. It does not matter what they do. The Haigha Sophia is a dwelling place for God and a beacon for the faithful.
