As a Protestant, the Catholic catechism definition is plain enough and acceptable to me: What is hell? .... “eternal separation from God.”

That hardly Scripturally suffices:

But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 8:12)
