Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

Peter

(The Gospels )

51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.

(Matthew 26)

47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

(Mark 14)

49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”

50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.

(Luke 22)

10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”

(John 18)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Today we approach our character study of Peter a little differently. As we discovered, the Four Evangelists tell the same Story, but with different points of view. This enhances their authenticity, rather than detracting from it, as , if they were all precisely the same, they would suggest collusion rather than agreement.

Not all the incidents, miracles, parables, teachings, or insights are present in all Four Gospels. However, the incident in the garden with the Servants ear is presented in all four Accounts. Let's compare them.

In Mark's Gospel, he just reports that "somebody" cut off the servant's ear. It could have been anyone. It is not important to Mark that we know who it was, and he is just describing the confusion and mayhem at the scene. Mark is the one writing to Christians living in the Roman Empire, and his Gospel sounds like a NEWS Report.

Matthew tells us that it was one of "Jesus' Companions" who drew the sword. We also have the Rebuke of Jesus that has come down through History: "Those who live by the sword will die by the sword." The particular translation "Those who draw the sword" (used here) is a weaker translation. Jesus was talking about a LIFESTYLE of Violence, not self-defense. Otherwise, why would His Companions have been armed in the first place?

Next, we have Luke, the Physician. Luke is a healer, so he is particularly interested in Jesus' miraculous restoration of the Servant's severed ear. Since the man was a mere servant, he was not one of the conspirators arresting Jesus, he was just there because he had to be. Luke gives us an example of the Wisdom and Mercy, as well as the unfathomable Grace of God. Luke also reveals that MANY of the Disciples went for their weapons. They were all armed!

Lastly, we have the Account from John, the "Disciple Whom Jesus Loved". It is John who reveals the name of the servant, and that the one who cut off the Servants ear was Simon Peter! (Surprise, Surprise!). A Man of Action, who speaks before thinking and acts before speaking, Peter does what any loyal, red-blooded, disciple would do! But it wasn't the right thing. For the past three years Jesus had been taking Peter into His confidence and telling him that this very thing was going to happen. Peter is still in denial, and tomorrow we will see how far that "denial" goes.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Numbers 6: 23 Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the way you shall bless the Israelites. Say to them: The Lord bless you, and keep you [protect you, sustain you, and guard you]; The Lord make His face shine upon you [with favor], And be gracious to you [surrounding you with lovingkindness];The Lord lift up His countenance (face) upon you [with divine approval],And give you peace [a tranquil heart and life]. 27 So Aaron and his sons shall put My name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.

And this we do and proclaim and agree in Jesus name. Amen.
