Mark Driscoll finally made it official: He’s starting a new church in Phoenix. The culmination of a comeback that has been gaining steam over the past year, the former Mars Hill pastor announced the news of The Trinity Church on Monday by email, Twitter and a new website.

In a folksy video on the site, which begins with a “howdy” from Driscoll, the pastor said he and his wife, Grace, sitting by his side, were “hoping, trusting, praying, planning and also a little” — he made a jokey grimace — “worrying about planting a church here.”

starting a church?

Not me. I wish he had placed himself under the authority of a mature group of Elders for at least three years first. That said, I don’t know any details beyond what I read about his exit from Mars Hill.

Read (and understand) post 17. Go to the link. I prefer not to expose the details on FR. Then get back to everyone and write whether you agree with Callie or not ...

You’ve reached the limits of my interest. I leave him in God’s capable hands to Judy or bless as He sees fit

I wish he had placed himself under the authority of a mature group of Elders for at least three years first.

Our former pastor's wife cheated on him, he cheated on her in retaliation, confessed to the church and resigned. He did precisely as you suggest and then started a successful new church. Subsequently, he heeded a call to become a fulltime overseas missionary. I expect I'll catch up with him in eternity.

I understand if you want to check on Ms. Peekins’ eldest. She’s feeling poorly ...

I think there’s a major difference between an incident of personal sin, as in the case of your former pastor, and a pattern of abusive behavior in a leadership position, as has been reasonably attributed to Mr. Driscoll. This is leaving aside questions of Mr. Driscoll’s “content,” so to speak, because his actions as leader would be intolerable even if I agreed with everything he taught.

I would be much more likely to join a congregation led by a person who had sinned and repented than one led by a person with a seriously erroneous concept of leadership.

Nicely reasoned and expressed. You’ve persuaded me. That is a first in the history of the internet, is it not?

I’ve had a number of occasions of finding that I was mistaken about something. I attribute the number of erroneous things I believed when I first joined FR to the fact that my family members just said, “Uh-huh, sure,” no matter how wrong I was about, for example, the partition of Cyprus.

My understanding is, he actually skipped out, resigning before discipline from the elder board could happen.

“My understanding is, he actually skipped out, resigning before discipline from the elder board could happen. “

If true, he needs to place himself under godly men for a time of restoration...

Sorry, I have no idea what you are talking about. Maybe that’s for the best.

It's a reference to the preacher in a Clint Eastwood movie, the man who spoke to the empty chair at the 2012 Republican convention.
