BARCELONA, Spain — Work on Barcelona’s breathtaking La Sagrada Familia Basilica, designed by visionary architect Antoni Gaudi, has entered its final phase of raising six immense towers that will make it Europe’s tallest religious building, surpassing Germany’s Ulm Minster.
Presenting the project Thursday, chief architect Jordi Fauli said the central “Tower of Jesus Christ,” the tallest of the six, will make the architectural marvel that draws millions of visitors each year one for the record books when it is finished in a little over a decade.
“The central tower of 172.5 meters (566 feet) will make it the tallest cathedral in Europe, because the tallest tower in Europe is Ulm, at 162 meters (531.5 feet),” Fauli said.
St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome will still have the tallest interior.

IMO, one of the most monstrously ugly buildings I’ve ever seen.
The Strasbourg cathedral used to be the tallest building in the world. The Ulm church was not finished until the 19th century and is now the tallest church in the world.
Actually I thought the same myself until I saw it in person. It is actually breathtaking and inspiring - very deeply Christian, you can feel Gaudi’s faith in it. Also the effect of the stained glass is amazing. It’s really hard to judge based on pictures but the overall effect in person is amazing.
Amazing that this cathedral was started in 1882.

I love the building. I’ve been watching it go up for nearly 30 years. I don’t like the outside sculptures that were supposed to complete the Gaudi-designed sections, but the towers are remarkable and the interior is truly amazing.

I can concur with this. When I first saw pictures of it, it does look ugly. Then when you see it in person, it is absolutely unbelievable. I think it is because you cannot see the detail of it from a distance. When you get close and start seeing all the sculpture and detail on the building, it is very overwhelming (in a good way).
It is worth traveling to Barcelona to see this.
I was not expecting such a beautiful work of art. I normally would not go for this architecture; favoring instead the Duomos of Milan and Florence. What was truly amazing was the small museum which showed how Gaudi incorporated things he found in nature and then incorporated them into his buildings. It opens you up to a whole new perspective.

I have been in quite a few of the classic European cathedrals, and can honestly say that Sagra de Familia is my favorite. The Duomo in Milan is so dark. I can’t quite explain the breathless feeling of light that I experienced when I went into the SDF. I could feel myself being drawn upwards through it. It is amazing.
Truly a symphony of geometry, light, and structure. Worth the trip to Barcelona.

I was there recently, the construction is fascinating, individual stones are 3D printed into plaster from Gaudi’s original drawings and used to cast the final concrete blocks.
