Pope Francis’ Latest Convert: Kirsten Powers
Christianity Today ^ | October 9, 2015 | Bob Smietana

Fox News’ highly reluctant Jesus follower has found a new church.

Kirsten Powers, USA Today columnist and contributor to Fox News, announced her decision on a live broadcast of “The Five.”

“Tomorrow night at 7 o’clock, I'm becoming Catholic!” she told viewers.

Powers, who grew up in the Episcopal Church, became an evangelical about 9 years ago, after attending Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York. Listening to Tim Keller preach opened the door for her to believe in God.

“I came to realize that even if Christianity wasn't the real thing, neither was atheism,” she wrote in a 2013 testimony for CT. “I began to read the Bible. My boyfriend would pray with me for God to reveal himself to me.”

For a while, Powers felt no connection to God. That changed during an overseas trip, where Powers said Jesus spoke to her. Eventually she joined a Bible study, an experience that changed her life.

“I'll never forget standing outside that apartment on the Upper East Side and saying to myself, ‘It’s true. It's completely true,’” she wrote it 2013. “The world looked entirely different, like a veil had been lifted off it. I had not an iota of doubt. I was filled with indescribable joy.”

Powers gave few details about her decision to become Catholic. She did thank Father Jonathan Morris, pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in the Bronx, on Twitter.

More than 100,000 adults a year join the Catholic Church, according to the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) at Georgetown University.

She was converted by Pope Francis? She’s “becoming a Catholic”? She’ll eventually have to make up her mind.

As you say. It doesn’t sound as if Pope Francis had anything to do with it. The headline is just intended to confuse things.

God bless her and help her. She will need it in her world.

I must have missed something. Did she mention the Pope?

Eventually she joined a Bible study, an experience that changed her life.

That will do it...

I can't believe the animosity toward her on this thread...

Getting mature in your walk with Christ is a lifelong endeavor...

I'm just grateful she is brave enough to proclaim her testimony in an very hostile arena...

How many of you people judging her would at your next employee meeting give your testimony?

Again I ask: did she make any reference to the Pope? Well, she might have, or not. But not in print, anyway. Not that I’ve seen.

She'll continue to be an ally of Evangelicals. She'll continue to be a defender of unborn babies She'll continue slamming the White House.

Prayer, the Lord, the Sacraments.

So purty, too.

"Welcome, Kirsten Powers!"

A case of unintentional consequences. Google Kirsten Powers and Pope Francis, to see the influence he had on her decision.

I just listed to her on a re-run of yesterday’s “The Five.” She said, as close as I can remember: “Tomorrow at 7pm I am becoming a Catholic. Ten years ago I found Evangelical Christianity.”

That was it, just a simple statement. No mention of the current or any Pope.

I’m guessing that Friday’s “the five” is available on the fox news channel for listening to.

Based on pope-a-dope? She is lost for sure.

Read the story, not the headline. There's nothing in there crediting Pope Francis. I have been to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in the Bronx, and it was a good church in the '90s. They had a regular traditional Latin Mass there, generally a good sign.

Think on the positive...and pray for her growth as a Christian.

Often when we notice a possibility like that....we are actually being called to do something about it. Prayer is a powerful thing.

:-)

I wonder how many faithful Catholic are leaving the Church after Pope Francis embraced and called to his side the leaders of the Marxist liberation theology, a heresy condemned by John Paul II and Benedict following the Magisterium of the Church's condemnation of socialism from Pope Leo XIII to Benedict XVI.

We saw the real Pope Francis during his peregrination to honor Fidel Castro, Cuba's murderous tyrant.

Lovely encounter among comrades

Francis ask Fidel for his blessing and prayers
