Greek Holy Synod: Yoga Incompatible with Christianity
The Greek Reporter ^ | 06-16-2015 | Philip Chrysopoulos

Posted on 06/17/2015 2:49:43 PM PDT by NRx

“The practice of yoga has no place in the lives of Christians,” was the announcement made by the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece in response to the International Day of Yoga, which was established by the United Nations in 2014.

The Holy Synod argues that since yoga is a fundamental aspect of Hinduism, it cannot be practiced by Christians because it is contrary to the Christian faith. And because of that it cannot be considered as just a “form of exercise.”

The official announcement further states that the Church of Greece respects the freedom of religious belief but claims is has a responsibility in order to avoid developing a “climate of religious syncretism.”

I doubt it.

The Christ story wasn’t the first of its kind. Not even the second.

There is no question that yoga is a religious practice of worship to various Hindi gods ....

Actually, yes it was. There are ancient myths and mystery religions which have similar elements (Mithraism has a form of baptism, for instance) but nothing comes even close to the story of Christ.

How about getting focused on preaching the Gospel and stop worrying about the inconsequential....

Turning to Christ and turning away from false religious practice is part and parcel of the Gospel.

what about fitness yoga? church no likie competition.

If it's all about fitness, use a program intended for physical fitness, and don't call it yoga.

You have a Christmas tree in December? Easter eggs in the spring? Better stop celebrating pagan holidays....

You’re just being silly now.

I call out evil wherever I find it, I don’t let things slide past. I’m a father of three kids, so I want them to have high standards.

You’re entitled to do as you see fit.

Pagan is pagan. When Christianity first rolled through Europe it co-opted the religious practices of others. My God can use anything..., ANYTHING..., even yoga, for His purposes. Or don’t you believe He can do that...?

Whether I do or not, that doesn't change the fact that yoga is a Hindu religious practice, not a physical fitness regimen. Was your "argument" intended to suggest otherwise?

Yeah, that seemed to be the major “pisser” in the OT - following after idols...

Since I am not Hindi and do neither yogic meditation nor practice yogic mental or spiritual exercises the danger to my eternal soul by performing a stretching exercise with a sanskrit name is a bit conflated. You on the other hand seem fairly susceptible to negative spiritual influences. Avoid exercises with sanskrit names at all costs....

I'm not Catholic nor do I follow or obey any pope. I'm a believer saved through the grace of God by the blood of His only son, Jesus.

If you do a study on yoga, you'll find it's not just a relaxation exercise, it's a spiritual exercise. Why would a christian follow the practices of false religions? There are plenty of exercises which one can do which don't involve the practices of eastern religions.

..for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

You mean negative influences like using logic to point out the flaws in other people's arguments?

Isn’t that like being a “half pregnant”?

Pillates uses many Yoga posses.

I wonder if this is more an issue of formal greek to English translation.
