Pope Calls for Agreement on a Single Date for Christians to Celebrate Easter

Francis had invited Bartholomew to present his encyclical on ecology. Zizoulas, one of the greatest Orthodox theologians, will do it in his place. “Mary is much more important than the apostles.” Forcing migrants back in Asia is not an attitude inherent to a continent that “has a mystical treasure-trove”. Similarly, “the fundamentalism found in some parts of Pakistan where Christians were burnt alive for bearing the Gospel is not inherent”.

Rome (AsiaNews) – Pope Francis today proposed that all Christians celebrate Easter at the same time. He did so, noting that “The Catholic Church has been willing since Paul VI to set a date and give up the first solstice after the full moon in March" by which Easter is established.

He must the proposal to find an agreement during a highly ecumenical meditation pronounced in Spanish during the third world retreat for priests, which brought together in the Basilica of St John Lateran about a thousand priest from 90 countries and 5 continents.

With ecumenical goals in mind, the pope said that he had invited the Orthodox ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to present his encyclical on ecology. "We are friends,” he said, “ but he had a commitment, and so sent the Archbishop of Pergamum Zizoulas. This way, the encyclical will be presented by one of the greatest Orthodox theologians.

“Ex oriente lux, former occidente luxsus,” said the pope in relation to Orthodox Christians. "From the Orthodox East and its Asian part comes the light" of spirituality, while the West exports "luxury, hedonism, consumerism," all things that are causing "decadence," said the pontiff. Indeed, he emphasised Asia’s “spiritual reserves,” noting the cultural and pastoral contributions from the Churches in Japan, Korea, Thailand, and others

Citing the fate of migrants in the Indian Ocean faced with refoulement, he warned that forcing back.....

One of the few things where I have agreed with him. The Orthodox calendar may be closer to the original calendar, so I think it would probably be conformed to their calendar. However, this wouldn’t affect Latin Rite services, just the date of Easter and all of the things that have to be 40 days back, 50 days after, etc.

This might actually give us a chance to redo the miserable Latin Rite calendar that allowed things like Ascension Thursday on Sunday...

Although the danger is, with this horrible Pope, Thursday would permanently change to Sunday. He has a total tin ear for liturgy, and an anti-tradition agenda.

But I do think the Eastern Church and the Western Church should work out the same day for Easter.

One date would be a good step to unifying all believers in Christ—and unify we must when faced with Radical Islam and Atheist Humanism (Communist) sweping the world. We also need one date for Christmas Too! The two most important dates of the Christian calendar. It makes a whole lot of difference. Someone had to make the move! Bravo Papa Fransico.

And while you're at it, pope, why not say something about the way certain people celebrate Easter? some_text

I guess the Pope wants to relive the Great Schism with the Orthodox church.

QuoteOne of the few things where I have agreed with him. The Orthodox calendar may be closer to the original calendar,

The original calendar template can be found in Ezekiel 46 as our Sovereign gave it to him:

New moon day, 6 work days, Sabbath..

And what pops out is there is 8 days there not 7.

Which is why Rome has changed times and laws like Daniel 7 said it would..they ignore the new moon day which was simply the 1st day of each month.

That template in Ezekiel is why Passover is on the 14th day and the 14th day is always the 6th and final work day of His 2nd week of every one of His months.

That is why the Son finished His work on Passover. The 14th day of the 1st month.

So, why does Passover and all those ‘jewish’ (really the Fathers) Feasts fall on different days and appear to float around the world’s calendar?

Because sun worshippers in Rome ignore one of His appointed holy days each month- a New Moon Day..

And with study, one can see the Savior was born on one of those new moon days (revelation 12 has the sign)
..

And when one knows that, they will then understand how the Word became flesh..
Because He was to be circumcised, according to law, on the 8th day of that month- according to Ezekiel’an template, that was a weekly Sabbath. (1 new moon +6 work days +1 sabbath day=8 at the start of every month)

40 days from His birth day would fall on the 10th of the next month- per law His mother had to wait 40 days before presenting Him at the temple..

There is one very holy 10th day of one of His months- the 7th month- the Day of Atonement!
And it doesn’t stop there..

A pattern emerges when one uses the correct calendar that exposes Rome’s calendar as a counterfeit..

Christianity should worry if it is only the calendar Rome has counterfeited ..
I know this- Passover (14th day and 6th and final work day of 2nd week, unleavened bread (15th day and weekly Sabbath) and Feast of First Fruits(16th day and 1st work day of 3rd week)
Can fall on almost any Pope Gregory calendar day.

Why?

Good question to ask if one wants to test and prove all things, especially in light of Daniel 7 and some scholars pointing to Rome as being that ‘4th Kingdom/beast in Daniel..

It isn’t an accident the world’s major religions, government’s and businesses follow a calendar named after a Pope..

It’s called Passover, and it is Nisan 14. According to the barley.

>> They are not autocrats who can act by themselves. The Orthodox faithful would not tolerate such imperial actions. Only an ecumenical council can change <<

So how did the current split happen among the Orthodox between the old calenderists and the churches that switched to the revised Julian calender? I'm pretty sure they didn't hold an ecumenical council to decide which calender they were going to use.

But having two seperate dates for Easter makes the “scandal” of a divided Christian faith community very obvious.

Again, going to back to my ORIGINAL point that everyone ignored -- let's say hypothetically the Vatican representatives and ALL the eastern churches got together, had an ecumenical council, reached a consensus and unanimously agreed on the SAME date for Easter... how would that unify "all" Christians when 600 million western Christians are protestants and don't give a hoot what the Vatican OR ecumenical councils decide? See post #11 for an example. You'd get 1 billion Catholics and 450 million Orthodox Christians to switch to a single date, but the rest of Christendom would continue to do whatever they wanted.

“Pope Francis today proposed that all Christians celebrate Easter at the same time.”

Christians, sub: Catholics. In any event Pope Frank doesn’t even speak for all of them.

Many of these groups are in rebellion against the canonical churches. Some, like the Russian Orthodox Church, have been old-calendar all along. Some, like the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) allow parishes to choose.

In any case, everyone seeks to follow the rule laid down by Nicea based on the vernal equinox. The issue is whether the Julian calendar (old) or Gregorian calendar (new) is accurate as to when the equinox actually is.

Remember that in 325 there was only one calendar so there was no calendar choice for the council to make / specify.

You don't say? Paul VI was willing to give up yet another tradition in the Church? Color me shocked.

Now if Francis truly believed in the Catholic Faith he would know and expect that when the Orthodox returned to the Catholic Church, then we'd all have the same date for Easter. But Francis doesn't believe that the Orthodox needs to return to the Catholic Faith.
