TRUE CHURCH and BIBLE

Catholic Church History Facts

When did the Church established by Jesus Christ get the name Catholic?

Christ left the adoption of a name for His Church to those whom he commissioned to teach all nations. Christ called the spiritual society He established, "My Church" (Mt. xvi, 18), "the Church" (Mt. xviii, 17).

In order to have a distinction between the Church and the Synagogue and to have a distinguishing name from those embracing Judaic and Gnostic errors we find St. Ignatius (50-107 AD) using the Greek word "Katholicos" (universal) to describe the universality of the Church established by Christ. St. Ignatius was appointed Bishop of Antioch by St. Peter, the Bishop of Rome. It is in his writings that we find the word Catholic used for the first time. St. Augustine, when speaking about the Church of Christ, calls it the Catholic Church 240 times in his writings.

St. Ignatius of Antioch, disciple of the Apostle John, concerning the heretics of his day wrote: "They have abstained from the Eucharist and prayer, because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the flesh of Our Savior Jesus Christ."

St. Justin Martyr, another Church Father of the second century wrote: "This food is known among us as the Eucharist... We do not receive these things as common bread and common drink; but as Jesus Christ our Savior, being made flesh by the Word of God."

“The material you’re linking to is written by a man who seriously thinks Paul’s letters are actually the work of Simon of Samaria and then were reworked by a cabal of “proto-orthodox” Christians. I can’t take Roger Parvus’ work seriously - and neither should you.”

This is an ad hominem logical fallacy.

His examination of facts and arguments stands alone and any objective judgment must evaluate those facts. The issues he raises are accurate. His solutions should be evaluated on their merits and may or may not be correct.

At least that is what truth seekers do.

Why accept it??? It’s not true...

If you believe what he said is not true we have nothing to debate about.

“This is an ad hominem logical fallacy.”

No. If he believes in nutty conspiracy theories it affects his work. And he does. And it does.

“At least that is what truth seekers do.”

He’s not a truth seeker. He deliberately seeks out nutty conspiratorial ideas which undercut traditional Christian beliefs (such as Paul’s authorship of his own letters) and champions them. And he’s apparently your ONLY modern support for your false claims. He’s IT. You chose a real winner there.

“So when Schaff disagrees with your religion, it’s a serious mistake...”

So when you disagree with the truth - which is quite often - what do you call that?

First, I don’t know if he is a truth seeker. I am. That is what matters.

Second, you wrote, “And he’s apparently your ONLY modern support for your false claims. He’s IT. You chose a real winner there.”

No. I listed a number of issues that are unresolved by being proven. When they are, you can write about “settled science” and I’ll take it seriously. Until then, I would never treat the supposed letters of Ignatius as anything to base anything from.

In the meantime, you’ve got nothing to show they are resolved - or at least you have not posted it. You did refer us to two books and included one quote. It was not decisive.

Not if you’re relying on a conspiracy nut. And you are.

"All the evils in the world are due to lukewarm Catholics" ~ Pope Pius V

Was this evil?

1566-1572 Pope St. Pius V expels Jews from the Papal States, allowing some to remain in Rome's ghettos and in Ancona for commercial reasons

Was Pius V a lukewarm Catholic?

What I said is true. You’re relying on a conspiracy nut who doesn’t believe Paul wrote his epistles.

vlad,

I’m not “relying” on anyone or anything, except my own analysis of the outstanding issues related to the letters of Ignatius, when they were written, when they were altered and how to deal with the changes over time.

I seem to have a capacity not present in your posts - to sort through evidence from many sources and arrive at conclusions independently.

Best.

You’re relying on a conspiracy theorist. You even linked to his writings and urged others to read his work. You’re relying on the work of a man who doesn’t believe Paul wrote his own letters.

Many of his points are valid. That doesn’t imply I agree with everything the man wrote. The points are worth reading just to understand the outstanding issues.

I do not expect you to understand that.

Heck, I even agree with you on a number of issues vlad, even though lots of what you’ve expressed in your posts is heresy.
