Thank you. Wonderful article.
Imagine Mark Twain having such a thing for Joan of Arc. It's one of the REAL puzzles of life, a man liking a woman from CENTURIES earlier.
SHE was born in 1412 and Samuel Clemens was born in 1835...over 400 years in Clemens' past. Go figure.
Actually, Joan wasn’t a gender bender. Because she was a women in a man’s world the Church granted her a dispensation to wear men’s cloths. She requested that ability and the Catholic Church granted it. Military men were not civil and “nice “ folk. Joan actually could have been raped by the high ranking officers under her, her soldiers, enemy soldiers and enemy officials. There was one attempted raped reported while she was a prisoner. Women’s clothing was completely inappropriate for the requirements of war.
Because women were completely inappropriate for the requirements of war.
Because women were completely inappropriate for the requirements of war.
I said that I incline towards a natural explanation for voices and visions. I recognize that there are those that don’t.
Well Joan sure put a lot of men to shame with her leadership and convinced the French King and Generals by delivering what she said she would. She also stood up well during her capture. Believe what you will but how many armies have you lead in battle?
As I said, the Lord works in mysterious ways ...
So God preferred the French over the British and sent a woman to save France from the Brits, interesting.
I don’t really see why as I look at the history of the two nations, that followed, why did he want the Catholics to kill Joan?
“Why did God send Joan of Arc? I would answer that it was to restore ...”
The question as I asked it dismisses the actual Strategy and is focused on the Tactic: “I’ll send an illiterate, female, adolescent peasant to get My Will done”. Lotta’ road blocks there (to say the least!).
This of course is EXACTLY the sort of thing a God might do just to show the world, unmistakably, WHO is behind it all. And THAT is what has always stood out to me with respect to the whole Joan of Arc story. It seems as much a message to people as an effort to accomplish some sort of historical balance between nations.
