...mdfxdb Senior Member Posted 16 October 2014...

I posted because I had never even heard of it until I moved into my new ward about a year and a half ago. It turns out it is a real thing and there are active members with callings and stuff that celebrate it. They do a cake and everything...

Backroads...Posted 20 October 2014

You celebrate the birthday of someone present. Celebrating the birthday of ssomeone not present takes on a different tone that, yes, does cross into "worship" territory for me.

I'm trying to understand why people would celebrate this, but in the end I just can't shake the feeling of being disturbed. It doesn't sit right with me.

As for "Praise to the Man", it does bother me if I think hard about it, but I like the tune.

It would be odd and weird for me to celebrate his birthday, and yes I have a problem with "praise to the man"...

So...do real Mormons discuss "Smithmas" on Lds chat boards?

(Ya better believe it!)

Is Smithmas celebrated in SOME Mormon quarters? (Yup, too)

Re: "Praise to the Man" references on this chat board...it's a reference to the Mormon hymn by that title that sings of direct praise and worship to Joseph Smith.

For a further explanation of what that entails, see: Mormon Tabernacle Choir conductor: 'Praise to the Man'...hymn praises Joseph Smith [Smithmas vanity]

(You can see by a few comments on this board that more & more Mormons are becoming uncomfortable with this hymn)

Let me guess, he was born in a manger, and three wise guys brought him presents.

Smithmas??

I find it very difficult to believe this but since this is coming from you, I am forced to admit its horrendous existence. DREADFUL and SICK.
Smithmas, what a joke.

It deserves ALL the derision you could heap on it.

Continued truth can often be considered as infatuation to those that don’t won’t the truth to prevail.

Well, you might be surprised how often the Mormon Church has tried to usurp CHRISTmas themes-- only to apply them to Joseph Smith!:

I was kinda hoping for a Joe Smith version of “A Christmas Carol” when he was visited by three ghosts in the night. Gotta wonder how that story would play out.

He would think that they were all IMPOSTERS since they were from CHRISTmas past, CHRISTmas present and CHRISTmas yet to come.n n
