What in the world do you make of THIS?

Posted on 12/07/2014 4:30:17 AM PST by wheat_grinder

James Cardinal Gibbons, The Faith of our Fathers, 88th ed., pp. 89.

"But you may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturday, a day which we never sanctify."

Stephen Keenan, A Doctrinal Catechism 3rd ed., p. 174.

"Question:  Have you any other way of proving that the Church has power to institute festivals of precept?

"Answer:  Had she not such power, she could not have done that in which all modern religionists agree with her-she could not have substituted the observance of Sunday, the first day of the week, for the observance of Saturday, the seventh day, a change for which there is no Scriptural authority."

John Laux, A Course in Religion for Catholic High Schools and Academies (1 936), vol. 1, P. 51.

"Some theologians have held that God likewise directly determined the Sunday as the day of worship in the New Law, that He Himself has explicitly substituted the Sunday for the Sabbath. But this theory is now entirely abandoned. It is now commonly held that God simply gave His Church the power to set aside whatever day or days she would deem suitable as Holy Days. The Church chose Sunday, the first day of the week, and in the course of time added other days as holy days."

Daniel Ferres, ed., Manual of Christian Doctrine (1916), p.67.

"Question: How prove you that the Church hath power to command feasts and holy days?

"Answer. By the very act of changing the Sabbath into Sunday, which Protestants allow of, and therefore they fondly contradict themselves, by keeping Sunday strictly, and breaking most other feasts commanded by the same Church.'

James Cardinal Gibbons, Archbishop of Baltimore (1877-1921), in a signed letter.

"Is Saturday the seventh day according to the Bible and the Ten Commandments? I answer yes. Is Sunday the first day of the week and did the Church change the seventh day -Saturday - for Sunday, the first day? I answer yes . Did Christ change the day'? I answer no!

"Faithfully yours, J. Card. Gibbons"

The Catholic Mirror, official publication of James Cardinal Gibbons, Sept. 23, 1893.

"The Catholic Church, . . . by virtue of her divine mission, changed the day from Saturday to Sunday."

Catholic Virginian Oct. 3, 1947, p. 9, art. "To Tell You the Truth."

"For example, nowhere in the Bible do we find that Christ or the Apostles ordered that the Sabbath be changed from Saturday to Sunday. We have the commandment of God given to Moses to keep holy the Sabbath day, that is the 7th day of the week, Saturday. Today most Christians keep Sunday because it has been revealed to us by the[Roman Catholic] church outside the Bible."

Peter Geiermann, C.S.S.R., The Converts Catechism of Catholic Doctrine (1957), p. 50.

"Question: Which is the Sabbath day?

"Answer: Saturday is the Sabbath day.

"Question: Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday?

"Answer. We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday.

“If Christ is not raised, your faith is futile, and you are still in your sins.” (I Corinthians 15:17)

That is true and can not be changed because we can not change the day Christ rose.

We also can not change the day God rested.

A person’s decision concerning sabbath observance probably hinges on the question of how we view the entire Old Testament. If all of it is still binding on us, then so is the sabbath.

That is true, and I believe in Paul`s writings we can see that he was not trying to change any of Gods laws but only telling us that we were to live them by faith rather than the letter of the law.

Matthew 12
11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?

The Catholic Church have made an attempt to change the law.

The Protestant Churches are not only disputing the letter the letter of the law but disputing the law itself.

Even Jesus himself did not do that.

The Sabbath Day is Saturday, without question.

In the Acts of the Apostles, observance of the Old Covenant sabbath was not one of the requirements enjoined on gentile Christians by the Council of Jerusalem with the words “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us...”

Neither is the first day of the week mentioned, but the question is since God rested on the seventh day how could it possibly be changed to the first day.

It means no matter how much Protestants “protest” against Rome they’re still bound hip to hip with lawlessness concerning the 4th commandment.

I just keep the correct Sabbath.

Straining at gnats ... swallowing camels.

Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ ... Colossians 2:16-17

In the Acts of the Apostles, observance of the Old Covenant sabbath was not one of the requirements enjoined on gentile Christians by the Council of Jerusalem with the words “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us...”

There's more to this...

Act 15:19 Therefore I judge that we should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God,
Act 15:20 but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood.
Act 15:21 For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath."

There was no need to tell the new converts what day the sabbath was or what day to worship on. At this point of time there was no other day known as the sabbath. The sabbath was (and still is) sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. The writers assumed that the new gentile converts would be coming to worship EVERY SABBATH. The notion that the sabbath was anything different didn't really take hold until 300 or 400 years after this and that only under threat.

Today many look at these verses through the prism of a centuries of Sunday worship and can't conceive that it was ever different.

You are right in saying that we are discussing when is Sabbath. I must admit that after reading the last line of the article we are discussing, I saw it said, "We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday."

So, admittedly, foremost in my mind and my haste to post quickly since I only have a few more minutes before leaving, I wanted to make it clear that as a Protestants, my church (the PCA, Presbyterian Church of America, the evangelical, and conservative offspring of the Presbyterian Church) does not hold worship services on Sunday because the Roman Catholic Church "transferred the solemnity" .... we do it to commemorate the day Christ arose.

If I am remembering correctly, you brought up the possibility that since quite a lot of scripture and prophesy spoke of or representing the "3 days", that, "Friday to Sunday does not pan out."

I pointed out that indeed, if you take into consideration that in the Old Testament the expression “one day and one night” was an idiom used often by the Jews for a day, even when it was applied to only a part of a day.... them indeed the commendation of the 3 days to Sunday does pan out, and scripture backs that up when scripture points to the first day of the week being the day that the tomb was found empty.

Now you are admitting that you are not contending He did not arise on the first day of the week.

Firstly, I am confused, then..... what exactly did you mean by,""Friday to Sunday does not pan out?"

And secondly you said, "The 4th commandment is God’s word about its time." IN reality, the 4th commandment merely says, "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy." If in the new covenant with God, the first day of the week is the sabbath day, then so be it.

He's 100% right. And historical chrstianity did the exact same thing to the rest of true Biblical religion that it did to Shabbat--eviscerated it and replaced it with something post-Biblical.

People who disagree with the good Cardinal should either become Catholic/Orthodox or else get out of chrstianity altogether and become Jews or Noachides. I recommend the latter.

"the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath"

Finally... Wisdom speaks.

Researching days and history is fun. It is NOT faith.

Christ, the Passover Lamb, is your Sabbath (rest).

If you place not your rest in Him, then next thing you know your mission becomes a fight with the brethren at the profit of the enemy.

The Cup is already clean thou Pharisees, drop the lawsuits and have a sip.

Well, you don’t have to “become” anything except saved. Being saved is knowing and believing (trust in, rely upon, adhere to) in who Yeshua was and what He has done for us. Jesus tells us that those who love Him keep his commandments.
I love Him and rely upon Him that I may not sin against God.

Christ was not crucified on Friday.
And Sabbath is explained below and many other places.
Gen. 2:3
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Unsourced indeed

And who cares?

Observing Gods day means rest. A day with family. No commerce. Mass

The Catholics are going to do that AND change it to a day different from Sunday?

We do it around her because we lived in Germany and they do it there. It’s a better way of life

Sunday observance? We can’t even keep thanksgiving sacred

Try closing everything for a proper Sunday observance

The cure D’ars. Had a message from God to the French. He was angry with them for not observing his holy day

I like your post and agree. But when I did an honest study on the history of the Sabbath and how it went from Saturday to Sunday and who REALLY changed it I was convicted I was in the wrong. This was not an easy decision and it has been a battle of sorts with many I know. I just could not find enough evidence to justify omitting one of the ten commandments.

Don't beat yourself so. Neither of those days existed when the finger of God wrote you that list.

I'm speaking of faith - the only thing that saves.

You are detailing religion - the only thing that drove Christ to violence.

” Neither of those days existed when the finger of God wrote you that list.”
Yes they did. They were called the 7th day and the 1st day. We got most of the days of the week names from pagan “gods’.

“You are detailing religion - the only thing that drove Christ to violence.”
No. I am detailing one of the ten commandments. Greedy money changers and selling in the temple is what caused Christ to drive them out.

Exactly, we can worship any day we want but it does not change the Sabbath day of rest.

That is true but it does not make Sunday the Sabbath, God did not rest on the first day he rested on the seventh day.

I would like to be able to change some of my history but it is there and there is no way to change it and neither can the Church..
