Pastor Joel Osteen to Oprah: "I Can't Be A Big Blessing To People If I'm Poor & Broke"
Townhall.com ^ | Jan 09, 2012 | Greg Hengler

Posted on 11/21/2014 10:33:31 AM PST by Gamecock

I don't know where or how to begin, so since Townhall is a secular website with many Christian viewers, I will simply post a couple pieces of scripture--one for each comment, although there are multiple choice Bible verses contrasting what Osteen personally believes:

OSTEEN: "I don't know who would say that you're not supposed to, you know, leave your children better than they were before."

GOD: "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother'--which is the first commandment with a promise--'that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.' Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." (Ephesians 6:1-4)

OSTEEN: "There's a belief that you're supposed to suffer more and be poor and to show your humility. I just, I don't see the Bible that way."

GOD: "This brings you great joy, although you may have to suffer for a short time in various trials. Such trials show the proven character of your faith, which is much more valuable than gold – gold that is tested by fire, even though it is passing away – and will bring praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed." (1 Peter 1:6-7)

As far as what God says about how we bless people and what we bless them with, God asks us to bless people with eternal gifts--namely, Him, and not earthly ones--regardless of our mental, physical, or monetary state:

GOD: "But He [God] said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)

Parting note: Belief in God, Jesus, and His Word is worthless if you do not love and obey Him. Satan believes all these things but doesn't love Him nor follow His commands.

So where is the line about being a big blessing?

Right Here: 45 second mark.
I see that...Jesus died that we might live an abundant life, and to be a blessing to others. I can't be a big blessing to people if I'm poor and broke and depressed and I don't feel good about myself.."

Luke 9:58: And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”

So Jesus by implication isn’t a “big blessing” when by any definition of Christian belief He’s the biggest? It is remarks like this which should give anyone a clue that Mr. Osteen is playing for the other side.

The most dangerous place in the world is between Joel Osteen and a mirror.

Joel’s congregation should put that, “I can’t be a big blessing to people if I’m poor”, in the collection plate.

He should not even be on tv or have a church since he has no clue as to what the Bible says. Why do people follow this character? I knew something was wrong with him the first time I saw him. Some of the best ministers I ever heard were among the very poor. Some seem to worship money instead of Jesus Christ.

Cannot stand this man. He’s smarmy and slick. I see no light of Christ in this man whatsoever.

Lots of people are big blessings who don’t have any money. Mother Theresa was, and any number of people in religious orders who take vows of poverty.

Also, there are many grandparents in the world who are wholly supported by their children and/or government benefits. They are blessings. despite being broke.

Maybe Osteen couldn’t feel special enough without gobs of money, but many other people do.

The fact JO willingly sits in the same room as oprah is troubling in itself.

Nothing wrong with being wealthy, so long as you don't put money and the things of this world before God.

For the record, Mother Theresa was a blessing to many, many people. As I remember it her worldly possessions were little or nothing.

Osteen is just a dud as all other “preachers” before him in the the vein of Jim Jones, David Koresh, Jimmy Swaggart, TD Jakes, Rev. Moon, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, Al Sharpton, Rev. Jeremiah Wrights; Rev. Schullers etc. Untethered from Petrine authority these idiots preach “their” own versions of scripture just like what Obama did yesterday. No small wonder that today’s mainline Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Episcopalian denominations now admit married homosexual gays and lesbians as “pastors” of their church. Their congregation is mostly uneducated females, they types attracted by Oprah and Ellen De Generes.

Joel Osteen’s residence is called a mansion or palace.

Jesus’ residence was called a field, or wayside.

Such is progress.
