Pope Francis: 'Pagan' Christians 'in Name Only' are 'Enemies of the Cross'

Not all those who claim to be Christians really are, said Pope Francis Friday morning. Some are Christians “in name only,” he said. “They bear the name of Christians but live a life of pagans.”

In his homily at Mass, the Pope that there have always been two types of Christian, those who truly followed Christ and those who only pretended to. At the time of Saint Paul, there were “worldly Christians, Christians in name only, with two or three Christian features, but nothing more.” The Pope called this sort of people “Pagan Christians,” whom St. Paul called “enemies of the cross of Christ.”

In Paul’s time, the Pope said, the two groups of Christians “were in church together, went to Mass on Sunday, praised the Lord, and were called Christians.” So what was the difference? He asked. The second were “enemies of the cross of Christ.”

The Pope went on to say that “even today there are many! We must be careful not to slip into the way of pagan Christians.” These are the ones, he said, who are “pagans painted over with two brush strokes of Christianity, so they look like Christians, but are really pagans.”

According to Francis, we all run the risk of becoming “Christians in appearance.” We are tempted, he said, to mediocrity, and when Christians become mediocre, “it is their ruin, because the heart cools and they become lukewarm.” Francis reminded his hearers that Jesus used strong language to describe this sort of Christians: “Because you are lukewarm, I will vomit you out of my mouth.” These, the Pope said, “are enemies of the cross of Christ. They take the name of Christian, but do not follow the requirements of the Christian life.”

Deuteronomy 12:30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. 31 Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God:

He became a Catholic the same reason as most who are Catholic continue it. It is EASIER since you need no real FAITH since you confess to a human priest for forgiveness (you can hear “you are forgiven”). You say all the hail mary’s and pray to numerous other humans in hopes that you may be heard just in case Jesus isn’t enough. You make vows that if someone is healed you will do this and/or that type of works. You hold a piece of human made material called rosaries because you must feel, touch, and see your faith. You call a man the holy father so you can see your god. You believe in purgatory so that you have a second chance to get it right since you’re not really sure about this chance. Your pope claims evolution is truth, but nobody has any proof that it is more than a theory. You claim that your church is the only saving church, but Revelation proves that some of all nations, tongues, and peoples will go to Heaven. You by your own admission admit that the Bible isn’t the only authority you go by (catechism), but yet the Bible teaches exclusively that any other teachings is of Satan. You and muslims worship the same god according to your pope. Satan’s biggest advantage is to attack our sense of touch, smell, taste, sight, and hearing so we must do something for our Salvation. Faith requires that you trust in God the Father by His Holy Spirit and His Holy Word no more no less. You can’t touch, smell, taste, see, or hear your religion, your denomination, your faith, or your God you must trust your heart, your Faith, and the Holy Spirit. You drink the real blood and eat the real body of Christ because you have to appease your human senses and not Worship by your Faith. Your Faith is lacking so you must do all the man stuff to feel good about your denomination and your god, but that isn’t of the True Real God. No sugar coating just the Truth sorry if you are offended, but it is what it is.

He has no clue what a Christian is... he is a poor lost soul

I generally like him (I'm a lapsed Catholic who now sits in non-denominational churches) but I'm afraid you are correct - many religions seem to go the way of the Pharisees in their teachings...then there are the propensities for those who were described as having fallen from Grace due to their return to making efforts to prove themselves worthy through worldly things again as if still under the Old Covenant.

So is it just the “pagan” Christians who are the enemies of the Cross or are Jews and Muslims enemies of the Cross too?

Inquiring minds would like to know.....

You ought to inquire into the Bible...The answer is in there...

“but yet the Bible teaches exclusively that any other teachings is of Satan”.

Show me in the Bible where it says the Bible is the sole authority on the teachings of Jesus Christ. Show me in the Bible where the word sola scriptura is mentioned.

Newman became Catholic because he was seeking the truth, and the true is the Catholic Church, whether you want to believe it or not.

Actually I already know the answer from Traditional, pre-Vatican II teachings and the Bible.

I was questioning what Francis believed, but I actually know that too. I was being rhetorical. There is no evidence that Francis believes that either the Jews or the Muslims are enemies of the Cross. Because he doesn’t follow the Catholic Faith. He follows the false, post Vatican II faith of False Ecumenism.

He's drawing from a passage in Revelation, one which I find very profound, significant, and sobering.

You by your own admission admit that the Bible isn’t the only authority you go by (catechism), but yet the Bible teaches exclusively that any other teachings is of Satan.

Really? Where do you find that written? Certainly not in 2 Thess 2:15, where Paul commends the Thessalonians for holding fast to the traditions he gave them, "whether by word of mouth or by letter"

The preaching of the Apostles wasn't in the Bible -- and we know it wasn't all written down -- yet the Bible points to it as authoritative. It even points to the preaching of those men put in charge of the church by the Apostles as authoritative (1 Tm 4:11, 2 Tm 2:2, Heb 13:7, etc.)

But you preach something else. And if you can't show it to me in the Bible, doesn't it condemn itself as a doctrine of Satan?

Philippians 3:5,6
Paul tells how he had been a Pharisee in the first degree.

When Paul was speaking of the enemies of the cress he was probably referring to the circumcised as in some of his other letters.

Philippians 1
15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry,

17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.

Here again who would Paul be talking about other than the ones he considered to be of the circumcised?

If some one is preaching out of sincerity we would hope they would excel but many believe the ones who did excel was not preaching out of sincerity but envy and rivalry.

Don`t mean to make any one mad but it seems Paul was just as good at this as the next one.

Kaspar, Marx, Dolan, Wuerl. Osteen, Warren. A lot of names come to mind. Jesse Jackson, Sharpton. And any “Catholic” that ignores the gospel of Jesus Christ, but follows the world, and caves into the sodomite agenda and believes in murdering babies on demand, and priests that give Holy Communion to those same heretics.

I agree with your list, but you should also add Pope Francis to this list. His heretical pro-homosexual, Islam appeasing, and many other heresies are damnable.
