Archbishop Chaput Blasts Vatican Debate On Family, Says ‘Confusion Is Of The Devil’ David Gibson | October 21, 2014 NEW YORK (RNS) Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput, a leading culture warrior in the U.S. hierarchy, says he was “very disturbed” by the debate over church teachings on gays and remarried Catholics at this month’s Vatican summit, saying it sent a confusing message and “confusion is of the devil.” In a lecture delivered Monday evening (Oct. 20) in Manhattan, Chaput also suggested that in the wake of the rapid series of court decisions legalizing same-sex marriage in more than 30 states, Catholic priests might consider opting out of certifying civil marriages as a sign of “principled resistance. Archbishop Charles J. Chaput acknowledges applause during his Mass of installation at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul in Philadelphia on Sept. 8, 2011. Chaput is expected to host Pope Francis in Philadelphia next September for a global World Meeting of Families, and his criticisms tracked complaints by other conservatives who were upset with Francis for encouraging a freewheeling discussion among the 190 cardinals and bishops at the Vatican’s two-week Synod on the Family. The 70-year-old archbishop, who was not part of the Rome summit, made his remarks in response to a question after a lecture event sponsored by the conservative journal First Things. “I was very disturbed by what happened” at the synod, Chaput said. “I think confusion is of the devil, and I think the public image that came across was one of confusion.”

Catholic Charities receive so much money from the government they will probably cave in the end though...

As it was clearly Franky who orchestrated this mess, I think the archbishop just basically said that the pope is, wittingly or unwittingly, serving the devil.

No red beanie for you, Archbishop Chaput!

I don't believe they will. Most of the caterwauling for this is from a minority and they will not cross the line into the alienating the Mass going Catholics. There are lots of people who say they are Catholic. How many show beyond Easter and Christmas? Not many of that bunch.

This from the guy who supports illegal immigration/amnesty, and in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

I don’t think Pope Francis is confused. Whether you agree or disagree with the Holy Father he obviously has a plan to change things. Otherwise I don’t think any of this would be happening.

I agree. If you are confused, keep it to yourselves.

If confusion is from the Devil than I can’t imagine what he thinks about this Pope. There is rarely anything meaningful and clear that comes from his mouth.

“God is not afraid of new things”...What does that mean? It would benign and meaningless under normal times, but it came a week after the comments from the Synod about valuing the sexuality of gays.

It always seems like some immature game the guy has going where he just hopes to give false hopes and fears to everyone that pays attention to his words.

Amen! I love how all the Non-Catholics love to tell us what to do. They should mind their own business. God’s got this!
