Why would anyone become Catholic?

Why would intelligent, successful people give up their careers, alienate their friends, and cause havoc in their families...to become Catholic? Indeed, why would anyone become Catholic?

As an evangelist and author who recently threw my own life into some turmoil by deciding to enter the Catholic Church, I've faced this question a lot lately. That is one reason I decided to make this documentary; it's part of my attempt to try to explain to those closest to me why I would do such a crazy thing.

Convinced isn't just about me, though. The film is built around interviews with some of the most articulate and compelling Catholic converts in our culture today, including Scott Hahn, Francis Beckwith, Taylor Marshall, Holly Ordway, Abby Johnson, Jeff Cavins, Devin Rose, Matthew Leonard, Mark Regnerus, Jason Stellman, John Bergsma, Christian Smith, Kevin Vost, David Currie, Richard Cole, and Kenneth Howell. It also contains special appearances by experts in the field of conversion such as Patrick Madrid and Donald Asci.

Ultimately, this is a story about finding truth, beauty, and fulfillment in an unexpected place, and then sacrificing to grab on to it. I think it will entertain and inspire you, and perhaps even give you a fresh perspective on an old faith.

It should be patently obvious that just calling oneself the "Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church" is hardly a sure sign of actually being it. There IS no one, single human organization or entity that can be all those things 100%,

sure there is, and there are probably a few of our churches in your general area...try one and you will benefit...I Guarantee it....what have you got to lose???

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. (John 14:6)

indeed a beautiful passage...but we all know that God is all merciful(lucky for all of us), but to think that God would condemn to hell those humans who had no knowledge of Him and Salvation would be dishonoring God far more than I would dare to do!!

the bible is of course the word of God...written by inspired humans. It, like a trignometry book, is better understood if you have both the book and a person learned in the subject.....I take nothing away from the truth of the bible and choose to follow the teachers who WROtE IT.

Problem is, the men who penned it are dead so cannot be consulted.

However, the born again believer has the true Author of Scripture living within them and HE can tell us what was meant and how to apply it to our lives.

>> “But God says:

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. (John 14:6)” <<

Do we have a mystery on our hands?

The believers that lived before Yeshua was born will be saved too, in fact, Paul asserts that they will rise before us.

Perhaps we are dealing with a mistaken impression of what “in him” and “through him” means?

The word is clear that the early Hebrews that believed will be saved.

in your post you stated that if Mary was sinless, she couldn't die. I merely stated that unless one was sinless, they couldn't die either, then pointed out that JESUS DIED.

If you're going to attribute words to someone, do make sure you are attributing them correctly.

I did NOT say that if Mary had been sinless, she could not have died.

What I said was this:Additionally, if she had been sinless, she would not have died. The wages of sin is death. If she died, it is proof positive that she had sinned, contrary to what Catholic teaching about her is.

You are destroying what little credibility you may have had left with not correctly attributing others words to them.

This is perhaps a fine example of why the Catholic church does not think its laity is capable of correctly interpreting Scripture.

And then Mathias was never heard from again, and then Yeshua, the only one that can appoint an apostle, chose Saul of Tarsus instead.

Men cannot appoint an apostle.

amazing, you read and study a book handed to you by the Catholic church 2,000 years after they wrote it and insist that you can interpret it better than could the learned people who studied and kept it alive for 20 centuries. You are an amazing person, even I couldn't do that.

So we've noticed.......

You have been asked before to provide the Scriptural references for any passages of Scripture you post and heretofore have completely disregarded those requests.

It’s not a denominational thing and I find it ironic that you demand courtesy of others when you don’t offer it yourself.

It's worship of self, self-deification that is the order of the day for protestants.

And you have arrived at this conclusion based on what? Have you met or personally talked with all Protestants so that you can't be accused of making rhetorical, polemical and bigoted statements condemning all Protestants? No, I KNOW you haven't.

For the protestant, the autonomous self-will is what reigns supreme, not Christ. Their theology speaks to that. The ultimate deciding factor: what does it mean to me; how does it speak to me; how does it make me feel; how does it affect me? The supremacy of self as the arbiter of Truth. The rest flows from that. The protestant interaction with others is not informed by Scripture but what they deem to be most advantageous to self. In that, a cold calculation is made.

I imagine if someone said,

"For the Roman Catholic, the autonomous magesterium's will is what reigns supreme, not Christ. Their theology speaks to that. The ultimate deciding factor: what does the magesterium say it should mean to me; what has the magesterium decided it should say to me; what does the magesterium tell me I should feel; what has the magesterium determined should affect me? The supremacy of the RC magesterium is the arbiter of Truth. The rest flows from that. The Roman Catholics' interaction with others is not informed by Scripture but what they deem to be most advantageous to Rome. In that, a cold calculation is made. As a result this mentality leads the Roman Catholic to say internally, "This far and no farther." Or, "I'm only obligated to believe what they tell me to believe...and nothing more. Safeguarding self is paramount."

...you might object to such a broad brush of condemnation. This kind of accusation is neither honest nor logical - not the caliber of dialog that is beneficial to all Freepers.

What is(are) your alternative denomination(s) for one holy catholic apostolic church, if you exclude the Catholic Church ?

It's not hard. Any church the preaches that we are saved by grace alone, through faith in Jesus alone.

>>if you'd never attend one, how do you feel competant to describe it???<<

Oh please. I can look up most everything online. Like this.

The use of temples, and these dedicated to particular saints, and ornamented on occasions with branches of trees; incense, lamps, and candles; votive offerings on recovery from illness; holy water; asylums; holydays and seasons, use of calendars, processions, blessings on the fields; sacerdotal vestments, the tonsure, the ring in marriage, turning to the East, images at a later date, perhaps the ecclesiastical chant, and the Kyrie Eleison, are all of pagan origin, and sanctified by their adoption into the Church.[Cardinal Newman - Development of Christian Doctrine, pg 373]

My post 2435 explains the relationship between these parallel verses in great detail. I “listen to the Church,” as Jesus commanded us, and I try to share Her Teaching, as “the pillar and foundation of truth.”

You’d do better to focuing your loyalty to Jesus alone. The act of placing anything above or before Jesus is idolotry.

I guess there IS hope; after all!

Catholics have NEVER said that protestants had no hope, we just maintain that they are Christians who are in error.

I vote that a couple of RCs are pulling a prank on all who have tried to give serious, reasonable, and honest responses.

Re-reading the Alinsky-like retorts a very few posters have given over the course of time, I think the real deal of what’s happening here is a private bet made on how long they can give silly, non-responsive replies in order to keep this thread going to post number...

You are wrong!

If you have not personally attended a PROTESTant service you would not know what it is actually like

My mother's family is protestant EUB, I have MANY friends who are protestant, I have attended services, funerals, weddings etc at numerous protestant servives....some were very touching, some of the sermons were very enlightening, all were very sincere, but none even came close to the solemnity of a Catholic Mass.....not even remotely close.

You seem to say you choose to follow the wisdom of man. If this is true you will reap the benefits provided by men.

I follow the Lord and I pray to Him for His wisdom and discernment.

May you hear His voice, follow His call and receive His blessings.

Jesus was without sin. He took our sins upon Himself and took our punishment. He died and rose again on the third day.

Why would anyone want to worship anyone else?
