Why would anyone become Catholic?

Why would intelligent, successful people give up their careers, alienate their friends, and cause havoc in their families...to become Catholic? Indeed, why would anyone become Catholic?

As an evangelist and author who recently threw my own life into some turmoil by deciding to enter the Catholic Church, I've faced this question a lot lately. That is one reason I decided to make this documentary; it's part of my attempt to try to explain to those closest to me why I would do such a crazy thing.

Convinced isn't just about me, though. The film is built around interviews with some of the most articulate and compelling Catholic converts in our culture today, including Scott Hahn, Francis Beckwith, Taylor Marshall, Holly Ordway, Abby Johnson, Jeff Cavins, Devin Rose, Matthew Leonard, Mark Regnerus, Jason Stellman, John Bergsma, Christian Smith, Kevin Vost, David Currie, Richard Cole, and Kenneth Howell. It also contains special appearances by experts in the field of conversion such as Patrick Madrid and Donald Asci.

Ultimately, this is a story about finding truth, beauty, and fulfillment in an unexpected place, and then sacrificing to grab on to it. I think it will entertain and inspire you, and perhaps even give you a fresh perspective on an old faith.

Are you saying Satan would tell you to follow only Jesus?

Yes he would. Satan would say anything if it meant getting me to repudiate the Catholic Church even appearing to me as Christ himself.

That's the nice thing about having a Church. I'm not dependent upon private judgment, personal revelation, personal interpretation or personal visitation and I'm not required to assign any meaning to it whatsoever. If I did see an apparition and it spoke to me I'm well within my right to ignore it and if I thought it was something that warranted taking it to my priest or my bishop I would do so and let it rest with them and await their instruction. If they told me to forget about it, I would. Obedience is a virtue.

What would happen if God tested JPX2011? Abraham was obedient to God. Who do you obey, JPX2011?

I obey God's Church. the Holy Roman Catholic Church.

I asked - What would happen if God tested JPX2011? Abraham was obedient to God. Who do you obey, JPX2011?

You replied - I obey God's Church. the Holy Roman Catholic Church.

Do you understand the wisdom of Genesis 22? God tested Abraham and Abraham succeeded. If God tested you and challenged you to put everything aside but Him would you fail?

I am God's man. Jesus owns me.

On the other side of judgment I will receive my due for obeying the Lord.

By your own admission you are bound to a man-made, man-led and man-controlled institution.

On the other side of judgment you will receive your due for obeying man.

Please call out to Him. You'll find His burden is light, much lighter than the one man-made institutions place upon you.

So, if that church says something differently than what the Bible says, you would obey the church?

Do Catholics hold a man-made institution in higher esteem than the One whom they claim established their institution?

Who is greater, Jesus or the Catholic Church?

You can’t serve two masters.

If Jesus appeared before you and said “leave everything else behind and follow me,” what would you do?

JXP2011 already answered this question.

Consider your answer carefully. This might be your very last chance to choose.

BWAHAhahaha....

You appear to be clueless.

Our Lord founded the Catholic Church. Now you know.

When you deny His Church, you deny Him.

Impossible. Any seeming contradiction only occurs as a result of defective interpretation.

Please call out to Him before it’s too late!

Luke 14:15-23

When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”

Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’

“But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’

“Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’

“Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’

“The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’

“‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’

“Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”

John 10:1-10

“Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.

Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

BWAHAhahaha

My, such a loving Christian sentiment.

At one time God invested the Pharisees and Saducees with the autority as “teachers of the law.”

My faith remains on the creator and not a human institution.

I trust my Lord with my eternity. The Earth will pass away and all that is of it will share in the destruction. But I lknow I am only safe in my Savior, King and Redeemer.

I wish you and your human institution all the best.

"The statement is made "prayers are not physical things". That sets the mental picture that we as physical humans cannot approach God."

=============================================================

No, that absolutely does not set the mental picture that we as physical humans cannot approach God (unless you are speaking about something like physically flying up to heaven in the flesh, and physically falling on the floors of heaven).

Earthly human prayers are expressed through thoughts (mental pictures) and vocalizations, and that does not at all say that we cannot approach God directly.    That is a fiction.

Peter said to Jesus (paraphrased), “If it’s really you tell me to come out of the boat and walk to you.” Peter was willing to “get out of the boat” if Jesus called on him to do so.

I wonder if JPX2011 would dare to leave the boat at Jesus’ call even if the Church told him to stay put.

If you won’t “get out of a boat” or even leave a Earthly institution at the Lord’s call what will your eternity look like???!!!

This occurred in another thread regarding the pope's comments in the current Synod, but thought it would be applicable in this thread as it goes to the issue of why anyone would want to be a catholic.

ME: >So if he is not acting on Christ's behalf he can only be acting on Satan's behalf."<

CATHOLIC: True. It's one or the other.

ME: >"As you admit the pope doesn't always act on behalf of Christ then any claim to authority/teaching he has evaporates."<

CATHOLIC: False. Who can say they are without sin?

ME: Well, the Bible mentions a fellow by the name of Jesus who was without sin. It's why the church is built on Him and not Peter.

We can never question the authority or aims of Jesus. However with man as the pope (a non-biblical office), we must always question why they do what they do.

Catholics add another person to this category of being sinless and that is Mary. See how conflicted the catholic position becomes when you attribute non-Biblical attributes, that is man-made attributes, to Mary.

The Bible clearly teaches Mary was a sinner contrary to catholic doctrine.

I withheld the name of the catholic poster for not wanting to embarrass him/her.

I give praise to God the Father and our Lord and Savior for this exchange.
