Spiritual Triage: Help Wounded, Drop Theoretical Baggage, Pope Says

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- With so much spiritual, social and moral suffering in the world, the church has "no right" to stay locked up in an ivory tower, engaging in "byzantine" philosophical reflection, Pope Francis told members of the Focolare movement.

"We have to go out! So that -- I've said this before -- the church seems like a field hospital," where the first order of the day "is heal the wounds, not measure people's cholesterol. That comes later. Got it?" he said to applause.

The pope met at the Vatican with 500 people from 136 countries; they were attending the Focolare general assembly in Rome Sept. 1-28.

During the assembly, members re-elected Italian Maria Voce for a second six-year-term as president, and elected Spaniard Jesus Moran Cepedano as the new co-president.

In his audience with members of the movement Sept. 26, Pope Francis said the new evangelization must go out to everyone, "starting with the poorest and excluded," so they, too, may experience "hope, brotherhood and joy in humanity's journey toward unity."

Focolare members, like all Catholics, can contribute to "this new season of evangelization" by being creative in the ways it brings God's word to the world.

This work demands "contemplation, going out, and formation," he said

If the “work” is finished, why do we still pray, fast, do penance and confess our sins?

Part of the call by Jesus to “pick up our cross and follow him.”

Do me a favor and tell me when Francis picks up his cross, rather than lighting menorahs in Catholic cathedrals.

That is what Jesus offers to us, by going to the cross for our sins paying for them by the shedding of His most precious blood.

Yes! Now we need to trust in the finished work of Jesus and stop trying to earn our way to heaven. God is NOT mad at us. In fact, His anger has been fully quenched. This is the reason that a trusting relationship in Jesus is soooo imperative to our eternal destination.

I've heard folks say, “well, I'm a good person”. It doesn't matter whether you're a good person. The fact is, God is so holy, so incredibly holy that without clothing oneself in the righteousness of Jesus, we have no hope of standing before a holy God. You cannot add to or take away from the work of the cross.

When Jesus said, “it is finished”, he meant that the payment for sin and the perversion that occurred with the fall man has been corrected. By one man sin came into the world, by Jesus the curse of sin and death has been conquered.

so he’s fighting a straw man

Or perhaps this is just his latest snipe at orthodox Catholicism and its adherents, those pesky "Specialists of the Logos!" who refuse to quietly acquiesce to the Kasperian revolutionary agenda and its "serene theology".

Job well done, Biggirl. You’ve just convinced another Protestant that there is Salvation Outside the Catholic Church.

No, you are WRONG, that it is IMPORTANT to have a SPIRITUAL RELATIONSHIP with the LORD, and this goes for those of US who call ourselves CATHOLICS ALSO.

....Oh, you mean “conservative Catholics”. The term “orthodox” is still being used by the Eastern Orthodox.

Wow, sounded just like a good Pharisee.

Jesus warned us against legalistic folks that teach such things.

....And that includes those of us who call ourselves Catholic as well. Or in other words, you can have a car in a garage, but that does not mean the car is now a garage.

Oh, you mean “conservative Catholics”.

No, I mean orthodox Catholics.

Full Definition of ORTHODOX: conforming to established doctrine especially in religion

God's richest blessings to you Biggirl.

My granddad was a very devote catholic and I've always respected the catholic church. Without the catholic church, we would not have the worship we have today.

I am an Anglican by the way. Share many of the rich traditions. I suppose to some I am a heretic. They are my brothers and sisters in Christ as well.
