Women Do Not Have to Submit to an Abusive Man, Says Pastor Tony Evans

Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Pastor Tony Evans Speaks Out Amid Video Revelation of Former NFL Player Ray Rice Slugging His Wife.

"Submission never means abuse," Pastor Tony Evans told his Dallas, Texas, congregation on Sunday, making it clear what he believes the Christian position is on domestic violence.

"We've been hearing about one kind of struggle here lately — domestic abuse," said Evans, referring to recent news headlines concerning Ray Rice, who was suspended indefinitely by the NFL after being caught on tape punching his wife.

"Ladies, you do not have to submit yourself to any man abusing you. You do not submit yourself," he added. "No man has the right to put his hands on him. You shouldn't be putting your hands on him either, but no man has the right to put his hands on you in a violent fashion."

Pastor Evans went on to inform women in his Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship congregation to take note of how their boyfriends and potential husbands currently treat them.

"If you're not married and your boyfriend is putting his hands on you, you know he ain't the one, because you know that will continue," warned the megachurch pastor.

He also addressed married women who might be victims of domestic abuse: "If you are married and if your husband is putting his hands on you that way, we want to know about it because we will confront him. He has no right to put his hands on you. His job is to be your protector and provider, not your abuser. You are not his kid."

"Submission never means abuse," Evans added.

There are a hell of a lot of abusive women these days, too. Men don’t need to submit to them or fight them. Get away from them.

Ladies, you do not have to submit yourself to any man abusing you.

Islam will have a problem with this.

My former pastor Bill Hybels (yes, that Bill Hybels) preached that God's admonition to 'let no unclean word exit our mouths' didn't apply only to Christians, but to the saved and unsaved alike. He expanded on the topic by saying that the door of God's word swings both ways.

Not only are we exhorted to not wound with our words, others should never wound with their words to us, strongly suggesting that if a woman - or man, for that matter - were in a relationship, even in a marriage, where the other person was continually killing them with words, they had every right to remove themselves from that situation.

Not divorce, he was quick to add, because God hates divorce, but to flee, perhaps for a time, to a safe place where one's life, emotionally, spiritually or even physically, would be safe.

On the topic of divorce, some of us have read where, in Old testament times, God 'permitted divorce because of the hardness of the peoples' hearts. I've long interpreted the phrase 'hardness', not as the people's attitude towards God, but because of their attitude towards each other. I think he realized that because of sin, there would be times where one's partner hardened their heart (hated) their mate so much that there was no hope of healing.

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body. ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”
Ephesians 5:25-33 (NIV)

A wife would be insane to submit to a husband who was not submitted to Christ.

Just wait until “Child Protective Services” are done abusing the woman!

True story:
Mother calls 911 to report hubby hitting her...again.
Hubby goes to jail.
Apartment is rented in his name and she gets tossed out after 2 week voucher expires.
Now she and 3 kids are homeless.
CPS takes her kids from her.
After getting outside help to get an apartment good enough to suit CPS, she still needs to undergo a CPS evaluation to certify she’s a fit mother....

Is it any wonder women don’t report abuse?!?!?

Thank you for pointing out the most offensive (to feminist) passage in in the NT. That one word “likewise” in 1 Peter 3:1 is sooooo encompassing that most of the pulpits of the land will avoid it, the price of truth is too high.

Peter would be shocked to see just how inclusive of the most minor offenses the word “abuse” has become. Off the top of my head the catalog of potential abuses include: physical abuse, emotional abuse, legal abuse, spiritual abuse, verbal abuse, economic abuse, but only if it is committed by a male against a female. There is of course no abuse committed by women against men; that is just silly to even suggest such a thing. If a man claims he has been abused he just a big sissy baby who is pouting because he doesn’t always get his way.

Yes Peter would be appalled by the damage done by feminism. Peter would be appalled by how feminists keep stirring up fear by constantly focusing the various media on violence against women both true and imagined. How pastors appeal to the women that make up 70% of their congregations by siring them up against their own husbands with fear and narcissism. How the protection of weaker sex has been twisted to result in the death of millions of females in the womb along with millions of males (but they are more expendable - they are needed like a fish needs a bicycle.)

Of course under patriarchal protection of the father and husband women were much safer than under the care of Uncle Sam’s fornication nation. If women were told not to fornicate, we could end the abortion debate, end the date rape cavil, end welfare, end WIC, and end VD. If men were held to a Biblical remedy for fornication we would be trillions of dollars richer as a nation. Feminism makes life more dangerous for women while convincing them it is good for them. Feminism is the cancer that destroys nations, families churches and inspires violence against the very ones it purports to care for.

For every case like you mentioned, there is a case like my EX... threw herself around our room, crying out like she was getting tossed around, knowing the kids were HEARING this - as I sat on the bed looking on in helplessness..

Oh yeah, she called the cops and I spent 3 days in jail before getting a restraining order against me, having to go to ‘counselling’ and all the fines associated with this.
Her hospital report said she had a small bruise on her HIP. Her divorce lawyer repeatedly claimed that I ‘beat her up’..

Oh, the spark to set this all off? - After 2 weeks of being home from my well-paying job, I told her I had been laid off... She saw it as time to cash in. And did it in the nastiest way possible.

My attorney told me that unless I could prove she’s working a meth lab and doing crack in front of the kids, SHE’D get custody - maybe. She did.

I don’t wanna hear about how tough women have it. Men are not the ONLY problem humans, in spite of current popular opinion.

I heard of an account by a black pastor who told about a situation in his tiny Texas town where a man was abusing his wife by beating her.

The church elders visited him and had a talk with him and told him to stop and they were not to hear about it again.

Sure enough, he beat his wife again. The church board paid him another visit and beat the snot out of HIM.

He never touched his wife in that manner again.

I couldn’t see it happening today, sad to say. Sometimes people need a taste of their own medicine.

That said, Evans is absolutely correct in also dealing with women who abuse their husbands, both physically and verbally. Any woman who provokes her husband or boyfriend into physical action, is just as wrong, and IMO, deserves what she gets and has no one to blame but herself.

So, it's ok if he's doing it to his kid????

Yep and you very seldom hear the truth about these maters, a woman can and do put a man through hell but he still feels obligated to look out for her.

Not sure what you mean by this, "If she married him there would be no difference." No difference to what? No difference between a husband who follows the way of Christ, and one who doesn't?

Another question: is a husband obliged to live with an abusive wife? One who abuses him and the kids?
