For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

On a serious note, my wife and I once attended a southern baptist church. It is my understanding that this is the same denomination Bill Clinton and Al Gore are affiliated with. It seemed a very conservative, white middle class church. However, during the 2008 election we noticed that a large number of people, especially young married couples, were strongly supporting Obama. Their zeal for him became so strong that it destroyed many friendships. They were also supportive of such ministry types as Joel and Victoria Olsteen.

My question is, does the fact that they were so easily brainwashed by obama lead to the possibility that they were also easily seduced by Joel Olsteen, if in fact he is not a Christian and just posing as one for financial gain? Or can those two beliefs on their part be separated?

Olsteen is strange character. The hair, lifestyle, constant smile - and ability to not directly answer a question. Based on what you have read in Scripture, does that reflect the nature of a disciple? I have my opinion but it is something that everyone should consider.

On these Osteen threads there are always those who reply by stating that it doesn’t matter what he is, that he is still reaching souls for Christ? But if the message and the messenger are indeed corrupted, then doesn’t that corrupt the message as well? And can a corrupt gospel lead to salvation?

would love to hear everyone’s thoughts in a rational debate.

As Music Minister in a Street Outreach, without even an office or a building in which to meet, I certainly have my issues with preachers like Joel Osteen. Does his philosophy imply that, as I labor in the tropical sun setting up a tent and a PA system, painstakingly write, arrange, practice and lead music in ministry to others, prayerfully post daily prayer threads on FR, study seminary courses on line to learn how to rightly divide the word of truth, and pray with any and all who ask of me, that somehow, because I am a penniless widow, I just “ain’t doin’ it right”?

And I can’t complain, because our brothers and sisters in muslim countries are being beheaded, crucified, and murdered for their Witness! Why aren’t they prospering? Are they “not doin’ it right” either?

I wonder how his message would go over in China, or in Iraq.

Mar 9:38 John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone using Your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop because he wasn’t in our group.”
Mar 9:39 “Don’t stop him!” Jesus said. “No one who performs a miracle in My name will soon be able to speak evil of Me.

It would appear that as long as Jesus name is used, God can/might use it. But it would be much BETTER if the message is true.

A further thought, a priest/pastor speaks to God for the people. A prophet speaks to the people for God. These were very separate in the OT. Functions became combined now in in one person in the NT? But in my opinion Olsteen is definitely not a prophet nor seems to be a preist either.............

I have thought the same. I know many prosperous Believers, who got that way through hard work, devotion to The Lord, and His blessings. But they have also suffered hardships including death of multiple children, severe health issues, etc. Does Olsteen’s show broadcast in the middle east? I truly would like to see what our brothers and sisters in Mosul would have thought of it. That raises another sad question...

We attend a conservative southern baptist church. However i have heard or seen little discussion about the martyredom of those in Iraq by such grisly means. Scripturally, other than prayer, what should be our avenue of help for them before it happens? Do you believe The Lord gives us the option of attending to their rescue or fighting on their behalf?

It is an age old question for Believers. In the end prayer is always the strongest route - though He does expect us to fish and not just sit around waiting for the fish to jump in our laps so to speak.

Well, we have seen both Britons and Americans go there and take up arms for ISIS, or even young women going there to be “pass-around” comfort women.

And during the Spanish Civil War, the “Abraham Lincoln Brigade (Leftists) was made up of Americans.

It makes me very sad that American CHRISTIANS can’t seem to pull it together enough to even PRAY for our brothers and Sisters over there, much less join them in their struggle.

People can say what they want about the Crusades, but if the muslims hadn’t overrun the Holy land with their depredations, there would never had been a “Crusade” in the first place!

And when it comes here and affects us directly, WHO will fight for us?

We fish, but through faith he can certainly make sure the fish jump into our laps:

John 21 -

3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.

4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.

5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.

6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

I think you hit it right on the head of the nail (truth). It is all about the MONEY! If a church wants to serve G_D then let them turn in there 501c. Do they serve G_D or the tax man or who? I know Yeshua told us a lot about how to build a mega church and get the MONEY. Now I don’t remember how many mega church’s Yeshua opened in his three and a half year ministry?

When it comes to spiritual manipulation, pick your poison! With so many other savage wolves on the prowl, I suppose you could fall into worse hands than Osteen’s.

LARRY KING: If you believe you have to believe in Christ? They're wrong, aren't they?
JOEL OSTEEN: Well, I don't know if I believe they're wrong. I believe here's what the Bible teaches and from the Christian faith this is what I believe. But I just think that only God with judge a person's heart. I spent a lot of time in India with my father. I don't know all about their religion. But I know they love God. And I don't know. I've seen their sincerity. So I don't know. I know for me, and what the Bible teaches, I want to have a relationship with Jesus.
-- Larry King Live, June 20, 2005
Aquinasfan: Can someone tell me what Joel is about in 20 words or less?
Alex Murphy: Sheesh - that's easy. The real challenge is to tell what Joel is about in 21 words or more.

Wolves without sheeps clothing are easy to pick out.

The ones who smile are the ones to keep an eye on. They’ll deliver you to Satan and make you feel good about doing so.

Yes indeed. I’ve seen on FB, people “liking” or commenting on an Atlantis Couples retreat with a guy from the group that sings “Gods not dead”.
I commented, “Spent your money on the poor instead.” I hope at least that made a person or 2 think. Just a little.

Indeed.

But if it was a “couples retreat” that was actually MOBILIZING people to stand firm in the Gospel and defend our brethren, I wouldn’t object to it.

I prefer “Advances” to “Retreats” anyway! :-)
