Joined by Church Leaders, Sensenbrenner Becomes Catholic

Wisconsin Congressman James Sensenbrenner (R-Menomonee Falls) converted to Catholicism in a quiet ceremony at Milwaukee's St. Francis de Sales Seminary on Monday — a private affair reportedly attended by at least two Wisconsin bishops and Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York.

Sensenbrenner's office confirmed the conversion in an e-mail. But it turned down an interview request, saying the congressman "sees this as a private matter."

The ceremony was first noted by Mark Silk, professor and director of the Greenberg Center for the study of Religion in Public Life at Trinity College in Connecticutt, on his blog, Spiritual Politics. In addition to Dolan, Silk said, Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki and Madison Bishop Robert Morlino were on hand.

A spokesman for Morlino confirmed Wednesday that he attended the ceremony. Listecki's chief of staff, Jerry Topczewski, said, "We don't comment on his private calendar." A representative for Dolan could not be reached.

The Republican lawmaker had previously identified himself as an "Anglican Catholic," Silk noted, "so jumping the Tiber was for him not much of a leap religiously."

"Sensenbrenner seems to have been traveling this road for awhile," said Silk.

Perhaps he no longer had the stomach for the Anglican part, in light of recent events.

I grew up as an Anglican, much as this story describes, before I converted to the Catholic Church as an undergraduate many years ago. I did so because, much as I had benefited from the Anglican Church, I came to the conclusion that the Catholic Church had the only claim to be the one, true, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church of the ancient creed. If my own conversion experience is any guide, it’s unlikely that anyone who follows such a path from Anglican to Catholic will turn out to be a liberal Catholic. I think converts to the Church usually tend to be more conservative and orthodox than those who were born into the Church but may not have considered all the issues.

This story makes a big thing about the Catholic bishops and the immigration issue. Their statements are not Catholic doctrine, but personal opinion, and I think most of us would agree that they are being foolishly misled. I hope and trust that that isn’t the kind of issue that is causing Sensenbrenner to convert. In fact, it seems very doubtful.

Let’s wait and see, eh?

Congratulations Jim.

I was aware that he had been considering this for some time.

I think he may be talking about women priestesses, openly gay clergy, openly gay bishops, acceptance of homosexual activity as compatible with Christian teaching. Just spit balling

Hope he repented for all the evils he has done in Congress.

That’s the Episcopal church of which I am disfranchised from for those reasons. I’ve been looking at the Anglican church but the first one I looked at had a woman “priest” so I had second thoughts. I’m pretty sure Anglicans don’t support the Sodomite lifestyle but maybe it has changed too.

As the saying goes, there the Catholic Church, the giant mustard tree, and then everything else like wild mushrooms that sprout out from the ground and before long wither and die.

What is generally found with converts to the Church is that they KNOW SOMETHING about THE CHURCH. Refreshing

What is all too often found about born Catholics is, they know not enough about THE CHURCH -

-— meaning all its teachings, history, rules, etc etc

In fact, a Convert may have actually READ the CATICHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH !

No wonder Dolan is so quiet. He must be mortified to have been invited. A pro-life politician (i.e., a Republican) becoming a Catholic?

Best wishes to Rep. Sensenbrenner. I hope that he will be as happy with his decision as I have been with mine.
